The Carroll Cup final was played under ideal conditions at Robertson Oval on Thursday night. A large crowd was on hand to witness Mater Dei take on our arch rivals Kildare Catholic College.

Mater Dei was at full strength for the final with Harry Himmelberg making a surprise return from a broken jaw to take his place on the bench.

Mater Dei started the game with the passion and intensity that is required to win grand finals. Joe Melton was outstanding in setting the standard for the rest of the team to follow with his desperate tackling and ferocious attack on the ball. And indeed they did follow this spiritual leader. The Mater Dei boys laid the foundation early with great defensive pressure and intensity at the contest. The onballers led by Jerry Maslin and Bam Bam Kennedy won plenty of ball and kept pumping it forward. Louis Beard had a big job to to on Kildare’s gun full forward and he did it with style. The back six were outstanding for the whole series with their strong defence and rebound - Lachy Flagg controlled play from centre half back and was well supported by Paddy Maher, Sam Lucas and Nick McCormack. Young guns, Luke Redfern, Jacob Whitley and Connor Byrne were all outstanding. Jock Cornell capped off a great game by kicking 4 goals and winning plenty of ball around around the ground.

Mater Dei increased its lead at every quarter to eventually run out 64 point winners

Congratulations to our Captain, Jerry Maslin, who was named Player of the Series for the second year running and to Matthew Kennedy who was awarded with the Mark Gooden Memorial Award for Best on Ground in the Grand Final

Thank you to the many staff who volunteered their time to assist with the Carroll Cup team. A big thankyou also goes out to all off the Mater Dei community who supported the Carroll Cup team throughout its campaign especially the band of students who provided banners, cheer squads and plenty of vocal support in the grand final.
