Justice Matters

Last Wednesday a group of nine Year 10 and Year 11 students and I boarded a bus to Warrambui for the "Hungry for Justice" Social Justice Camp facilitated by the Catholic Schools Office. The students joined peers from the four other diocesan high schools to learn about a range of social justice issues including human trafficking, poverty, indigenous inequality, refugees, care for the environment and the impact of international sporting events on disadvantaged communities.
We were exposed to a range of facts and personal stories of injustice that exist in the world today. This information caused us to question our role as consumers and the actions we can take on a local level to address inequality. The students were deeply moved by the experience and inspired to "think global, act local". They have planned a range of ways to raise awareness in our Mater Dei community in the areas of poverty and access to water.
We recognise that our community is very generous when it comes to making charitable donations and the students would like to take this support to the next level through education to increase awareness of social justice issues and making positive choices that have a ripple effect on the world around us.
On behalf of the students and the College, I would like to thank Chris Cotter, Jane Plum, Kelly Humphrey and Karen Gardiner from CSO Wagga for planning and delivering such a valuable experience.
