Grades 2-3

Reading a Roald Dahl classic: James and the Giant Peach during The Code this week

Term 1

We have had a wonderful start to the year in the 2/3 area: getting to know one another, settling into classroom routines, and working hard to achieve our learning goals! In Spanish Literatura, students have been working on their Speaking and Listening skills to describe themselves and their peers. In English Literacy, we have been using the writing seed 'My Imaginary Animal' to write a narrative, following the writing process. In Reading, students are learning the comprehension strategies Summarising and Predicting. Students have also been using long vowel sounds during Spelling (e.g igh/ i_e/ ie and --y).

During Inquiry, we have been exploring different ways of learning and schools across the world. Students have also identified character strengths and ways we learn best at school such as the power of a growth mindset.

In Maths Builders, students are learning about Place Value, our number and algebra focus for Term 1 in both languages. They have been participating in activities to reinforce their skills and understanding in this area and enjoying working with their team for rotation activities. We have also been creating graphs to display data such as the Winter Olympics Medal Tally and Class Birthdays.

Weekly timetable

Please see below for a visual timetable of our week as well as the timetable for Grade 2/3 specialists day every Tuesday.  A reminder that students across the school are to wear their house colours on their specialists day. Grade 2/3 students have enjoyed getting to learn with their peers in other classes and get to know other 2/3s in their school house every Tuesday! The Library is open every Wednesday lunchtime for students to borrow books.

Parent info night

On Wednesday 16th March, families are invited to come into the school for the last hour of the day (2:30-3:30pm) to see your child's classroom. Students will be working in their Maths Builders team rotations during this time. Following this, there will be an information session from 3:40-4:00pm held in the Grade 2/3 area. Afterwards, our curriculum leadership team will be providing an opportunity for parents to learn about our refined literacy model and the ways to support students at home. This will provide clarity for our families around how we are teaching reading at Newlands Primary School.

Students are allowed to utilise the playgrounds during this time, but please note staff will not be on duty in these areas after 3:45.

Sun smart

Please ensure your child brings their hat to school everyday during Term 1 and Term 4.  A message from our PE teacher Raul to please bring a hat for PE so you can always participate in PE lessons.

Devices

We have enjoyed using devices as a learning resource in English and Spanish lessons this term. While they may not be used in every lesson throughout the day, we ask that students do bring them in each day (including Tuesdays this year). There is also the option for student devices to be left in classrooms in locked cupboards during the week. Please get in touch via sentral with your child's teacher if you wish to do this. Newlands Primary School uses 'Zscaler' a safe-internet search program so students are blocked from accessing inappropriate content while connected to the school network.
