Foundation-1

Term 1 is flying past!

Can you believe we are in Week 7 of Term 1 already? The Grade 1 and Foundation students have settled into their classroom routines and are looking forward to coming to school every day! Students are all showing great care and responsibility by looking out for each other in the playground and during learning time. They are all demonstrating the 5Ls of listening and sharing their knowledge about school and how to be good learners.

InquiryThis term in Inquiry, the F/1 students have been focusing on Gender and Identity. We have expressed our own individuality through stories, play and creative activities. These have been displayed around the classrooms as a great reminder that all students belong at Newlands Primary School.

In Week 5, the students attended an incursion that taught them about the Zones of Regulation. These zones provide a common language across the school that supports positive mental health and wellbeing. There are four zones, Zoa Verda (green) Zona Azul (blue), Zona Amarilla (yellow) and Zona Roja (red). All the zones are natural to experience. The focus of our incursion was to help us recognize which zone we are in and come up with strategies and tools to help us manage our emotions.

The Red Zone is used to describe extreme feelings such as anger or rage.

Someone in the Yellow Zone may be experiencing frustration, worry, anxiety, silliness, or nervousness.

The blue zone describes low states such as when you feel sad, tired, sick, or bored.

The Green Zone is where learning takes place! It is a calm state, where a person may feel happy, focused or content.

Spanish Literacy:

Our students have been learning how to state their likes and dislikes in Spanish by using "me gusta, no me gusta, me encanta, me gusta mucho, no me gusta nada". After continuous rehearsals, they have practised and performed a puppet show and posted it on Seesaw. They were really confident in the use of new and previous vocabulary.

During reading, our lessons are well structured in a way where our students join in engaging alphabet games and independent reading in Spanish.

Each day, students have been bringing how one English and one Spanish book to practice the new sounds that they learn in The Code and other strategies we explore during Reading.
