VISUAL ARTS NEWS by Ms Catherine Henderson

Term One is always an exciting launch for Visual Arts in our community and state. With both Freo, Sculpture at Bathers (February 15 – March 2) and now Sculpture by the Sea (open now until 23 March) at Cottesloe Beach. Both exhibitions have included multiple artists from diverse backgrounds. They showcase a wealth of materials and styles.

Back to school and all of our WGVPS Artists have been investigating and responding to the above events.

Web sites to visit if you couldn’t attend or if you would like to linger some more, are:

A quick art snapshot of activities of our students include:

  • Template shopping for shape, creating murals showcasing frottage (textural rubbings) and colour (Yr1)
  • Magic carpet rides from ancient Egypt with hieroglyphs and overpainting to wild journeys creating vibrant linear Asian dragons (Yr 2)
  • Not to be out done Year 4s have examined actual remnants of highly patterned china pieces from early times. They have also learned about a historic Vietnamese shipwreck which was laden with valuable Chinese cargo from the mid 1600s. The students resulting artwork is complex. It celebrates both Asian and European mythology, through ceramics and folklore.
  • Woops, I forgot to mention our Year 3s, who have been captivated with printmaking, clay modelling, and mixed media. They have been riveted to Asian performance artists. The challenge and fun has been on how to capture striking facial design, colour, and movement.
  • Year 5s, have explored form, shape, and line through both local and famous artists of the twentieth century. Wow wow wow… mind bending creations are on the go!
  • Finally, Year 6s have been creating quirky topical posters involving graphics and a complex use of pastel application. They have been introduced to Mambo art visuals and artist Christopher O’Donnell’s (Reg Mombassa) inspired artworks. The last half of this term will be on how to capture form and moving into using clay.

E-Safety with the E-Safety Commissioner

With children spending more time online playing games, going on YouTube and using social media, they may face challenges with on-line bullying.

The e-Safety Commissioner Website has a page dedicated to young people who are seeking support in reporting online bullying. Click on the image below and it will take you straight to the page that you can show your children to help empower them to seek help.
