Music

Written by Michael Lapina

It's hard to believe that we've just reached our halfway point of Term 1, and our Music students have achieved so much.

Primary Music

In the Years Four, Five and Six classes, our students have all impressed our teachers with the speed at which they have embraced Music Theory.   We have been spending quite bit of time establishing memory triggers (or mnemonics) to help the students read and reproduce rhythmic patterns using musical notation, as well as identifying the notes on the musical stave.  They have also learned how to locate each note on the keyboard, and have even commenced playing chords (two or more notes played simultaneously) in such a way that they are now recreating songs.  Here's s short video of our Year Five students playing a snippet of the chord progression from the song "Dance Monkey".

In the coming weeks, the students will be broken up into small groups, where they will:

  • select a song,
  • break down the chord structure
  • practice playing the chords on the keyboards
  • perform the song for their peers in their class.

Secondary Music

The Year Seven Music students have been working on their Inquiry Central Concept that Music is influenced by society (and vice versa).  Students were broken up into small groups to explore the central concept in different periods of music.  The students explored:

  • Defining features of each period (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern)
  • A notable composer of the period (including their life story)
  • Events and features within the society that influenced their music
  • Other composers that were influenced by their primary composer.

Our Year Seven students demonstrated a very mature and structured approach in tackling this topic, and their class presentations were of a very high standard.  They should all be commended.

Extra Curricular Music

Vocal Extensions / Victorian State School Spectacular Choir:  After an intense audition process, 30 students from Years Four to Seven have been selected to be part of our Vocal Extensions Group which will represent our school as part of the 2022 Victorian State School Spectacular Mass Choir section.  Although rehearsals are yet to commence, the students are all very excited.  We are extremely proud of their courage and commitment.

Lunchtime Choir: Our Lunchtime Choirs have commenced.  The Choir rehearsals occur every Friday for Timetables A and B during their respective lunch breaks and is open to all students --- Auditions are not required.  There are many performance opportunities this year, and many of the students have already sung at the weekly Assemblies.

Private Instrumental Lessons:. We are very fortunate at Saltwater P-9 College that we can offer Private Instrumental Lessons to our students in the following instruments:

The lessons are handled by an external service provider (Musica Fabri Pty Ltd) and can be scheduled during or after school, depending on the most suitable time as agreed between teachers and parents.   For more information and registration links, visit:   www.musicafabri.com.au
