Physical Education

Written by Matt Symmons

The students at Saltwater College have continued to be involved in various games, sporting and fitness activities in the school gym, oval, basketball courts and at Williamstown Beach over the last two weeks. Our prep students were introduced to tagging games, and our focus has been on running and dodging and following simple instruction and rules. Year One and Twos are being assessed on the Fundamental Motor Skills of running. Parents and students can see their own individual progress on School Box. Our year Three, Four, Five and Six's have been introduced to and revisited Cross-Country running.

The PE Essential Agreement has been shared with all students, and this will support and guide our classes.

Year 5/6 Beach Program Our Year 5/6’s ventured to Williamstown Beach on Monday (21st and 22nd of February) to complete the first of three Beach Program Education sessions. A lot of fun was had, at both the Williamstown Swimming and Lifesaving Club’s pool, as well as in the beach on the days. Students took part in a range of activities including: beach safety, pool safety, correct use of boogie boards and rescue boards, swimming activities and beach flags. Below is a reflection from two of our students.

All the Year Sixes went to Williamstown Beach for our yearly beach program. We were split into groups based off our house colours. I really enjoyed doing the first session for the beach program.  My house (Gold) started with the nipper boards, and I really enjoyed it. We also did water safety, activities in the pool and sand activities. During the first day of the beach program, I learnt about how to survive rips that might occur. I also learnt about different animals that you might find at Williamstown Beach. I really enjoyed the first day of the beach program. I would say that the nipper boards were my favourite because it was fun to paddle into the ocean. I can’t wait for the rest of the programs.

In beach program I learnt how to use a surfboard and what position to start off with. I am proud that I went to beach program, because kids like me need to learn about CPR and where we are, example if we need to know what’s dangerous, we could find signs. During beach program I think I was an open minded because in the deep end I was normally scared to go further but instead I went further than I did last year. Next time my goal is to be a risk taker and do more challenging things!

  • Always stretch for 5-10 minutes before and after your training to make sure you warm up your muscles before you run and cool down your muscles after you run.
  • If training at home find a training partner (adult supervision) to run with and to keep you company. If training at school, you may like to train with a friend.
  • This is an optional training program for anyone who wants to improve their fitness level for the Saltwater cross country. The Year 3 /4 cross country is 4 April and the Year 5/6/7 cross country is 5 April.
  • The most important thing is to enjoy your training as well as improving your fitness level.
