Year Three News

Written by the Year Three Team

The Year Three students have successfully completed the first 20 days program and have settled in well to school. They have begun their new unit of inquiry under the central idea ‘rules and laws contribute to developing a more productive society’ In this unit they will explore how rules and laws are made, how they have changed over time and our personal responsibilities around following rules and laws within society.

Students are continuing to produce high quality pieces of work and engage in all lessons. Well done!

 Reading

In Reading, the Year Three cohort have been practising the reading strategy of QAR. As smart thinking readers, the students have been creating meaning and drawing conclusions from texts using their prior knowledge and clues from the text. The Year Three’s used pictures and words from the text to identify right there questions during independent reading time.

One of the highlights of the week is our readers theatre. Students work in groups to identify their selected roles focusing on their fluency and expression.

Writing

In writing students have begun to explore the writing genre of persuasive texts.  Students have been introduced to the persuasive writing techniques of

  • Repetition
  • Rhetorical questions
  • Emotive language
  • Inclusive language
  • Facts/evidence

Students have been familiarising themselves with these techniques in preparation to write their own persuasive text next week based around a fantastic mentor text called “Pig Parade” When writing their persuasive texts students will have an area of focus that directly correlates to the writing skills in NAPLAN which they will sit in May.

Maths

In Maths, students continue to develop their problem solving skills by working through maths problems using RUCSAC.  These questions have been related to place value and ordering numbers.

Students have also been completing a Friday multiplication task called the three minute challenge. In this task students focus on learning a multiplication strategy and completing as many questions as they can in 3 minutes using the new strategy.

In the coming weeks students are going to begin fluid maths groups targeted at their individualised learning goals.

Inquiry

In inquiry student have begun to unpack their central idea. ‘rules and laws contribute to developing a more productive society’ Students worked in groups to clarify the words in the central idea and brainstorm what they might mean. Students were given the opportunity to write down their wonderings for the upcoming unit. Students began to learn about Rules and Laws and their similarities and differences between the two.  Students began to discuss where in our lives we have rules and laws and why we might have them.

Kind regards,
