Dear Year Two families and guardians,
The Year Twos have officially finished the first 20 days of school program which has allowed the students to settle back into the school routines seamlessly. We have been so proud of how the students have conducted themselves throughout the program and how they exhibited the learner profiles each day.
Reading
In Reading, students have continued to revise and practise the expectations of independent reading and commenced guided reading. Students created a guided reading essential agreement within their classroom explaining what a guided reading session should look like, sound like and feel like. Students also began to explore readers theatre as a way to encourage them to practise and improve their fluency and expression when reading.
Writing
In Writing, students have been revising recounts, ensuring that they remember to use the 5Ws - who, what, when, where and why. They have begun their first writing unit on Poetry where they are using their Writer's Notebooks to plant seeds and then creating a poem to help ignite the readers imagination or stir emotions.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students continued exploring open-ended problems using a range of strategies and were encouraged to continue using RUCSAC for every worded problem they came across. Students also began to revise skip counting and completed some Essential Assessments to help ensure learning is driven by data and relevant to student needs.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students continued to explore and develop their understanding of the learner profiles. Each class has now completed all of the learner profiles and have commenced the creation of their Essential Agreement which is made in collaboration with the students. On Friday February 25th, we also held our first Provocation Day for the year which was a very exciting day for all involved. The aim of provocation day is to expose the children to our Unit of Inquiry without mentioning the focus to get them thinking and making connections to what they think our Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry may be. Students visited each classroom on their timetable and participated in an activity that related to one of the dimensions of health. They then completed a class reflection on what they liked, did not like and what they wondered. It was great for the Year Two teachers to get to know the rest of the students on their timetable and the students reported that they had so much fun and loved getting to visit each classroom and teacher.
Junior School Council
Across the cohort, a number of students were interested in becoming the JSC representative for their classroom. The Year Two team would like to thank all those who applied for the positions and were risk takers by presenting a speech in front of their class. We are so proud of how well everyone did and hope that all applicants continue to be risk takers and chase their dreams and ambitions. Congratulations to the following students who were appointed as the successful candidates for JSC representative and runner up for 2022.
