Dear Year One families,
We are more than halfway through Term One!
It’s been an exciting time for the Year One cohort, with so much new learning that is happening in all classrooms.
The Year Ones have completed exploring and investigating all the different attributes of the Learner Profile. Classes are now beginning to use this knowledge to create and design their own class’ Essential Agreement. The students have showcased fabulous communication skills when coming up with the different ways they will show each attribute in their own class. This has been a fabulous experience to develop student voice and ownership, by collectively and collaboratively deciding what they want their classroom Essential Agreement to be. We can’t wait to share them with families shortly!
Reading
In Reading, students have been focusing on the comprehension strategy of predicting. Students have been using visual and text clues to predict what could be happening in a story - before reading as well as adjusting their predictions during reading based on new information they gather as they read. We have continued to focus on the, ‘Good Reader Strategies’, to decode unfamiliar words. Guided Reading sessions have begun in all classrooms, enabling groups to work closely with the teacher to enable individual conferencing, feedback and goal setting to occur. Our Take Home Reading Program has started, where students borrow two take home readers each week to read. Please record these books in your child's reading log book.
Writing
In Writing, students have been planting lots of 'writing seeds'(ideas) in their Writer's Notebook. This enables the students to brainstorm a list of ideas, add artefacts and other interesting things into. These may later trigger ideas for students to write where they can develop these ideas into writing pieces. Students are continuing to work on improve their letter formation by using dotted thirds. This is done through our weekly handwriting sessions. Students are actively using their class’ word walls to assist them in spelling unknown words as well as being risk takers by first, thinking about the sounds they can hear and writing the letters that make that sound.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, the students have continued to engage and explore open-ended maths tasks following the 'RUCSAC' model designed to challenge and expand their mathematical thinking. The Year Ones are developing their awareness of using mathematical materials, visual representations, ten frames and number sentences when solving mathematical problems.
