Teaching and Learning News

As our 2018 school learning year draws to a close, we can be proud of the achievements and growth of all learners in our community.
Holiday Learning
The holidays are a time for rest, relaxation, family time and celebrations but learning doesn’t stop when school finishes and holidays begin.
You can help foster a love of learning and progress your children’s skills and knowledge over the holidays.
Try these suggestions.
Go to museums - kids love the interactive nature of these places and this experience can foster more active engagement with topics and ideas that will then transfer into the learning at school
Take them to the supermarket - think about how many interesting and potentially unanswered questions you can ask as you wander up and down the aisles - packaging, directions, advertising, weights and measures
Let them be bored - there’s a lot to be said for leaving children to their own devices and letting them just be. Creative, imaginative and investigative play develops curiosity and problem solving.
Make reading part of the routine - reading is one of the best forms of learning for all kids. Visit or join a local library- http://libraries.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/
Discuss current events - talking builds vocabulary and clear expression. It assists critical and creative thinking.
So let your kids enjoy the holidays - but show them that learning can be one of the most fun holiday activities, too.
2019
We are already looking ahead to 2019 with excitement and anticipation.
Our 2019 school year begins with one to one student assessments on either Wednesday January 30th or Friday February 1st. These assessments are an opportunity for teachers get to know your child better. We are committed to giving each child the best possible start for their year of learning in 2019 and knowing where they are at the beginning of their journey is important for personalising our teaching.
Please log on to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use code y49vs to book a 30 minute appointment. You will need to present your child to their classroom 5 minutes before the appointment time.
Assessments take approximately 30 minutes. These are student only appointments and parents are not required to attend but we invite you to wait in the seated area provided until assessments are completed.
Please note this is not a full school day, students are not required to wear school uniform and students are only required to attend school for the duration of their assessment.
We suggest that you provide a water bottle for your child to bring with them.
Assessment for new Prep students will take place on Wednesday February 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th and March 6th.
Prep assessment appointments are booked using www.schoolinterviews.com.au using code zv2y6.
