Principal's Update

Regional Spelling Bees!
Congratulations to Claire J, Jaehee J, Akshara E and James B on an outstanding effort in the Regional Spelling Bee competition yesterday.
Both Claire and Jaehee gave a stellar effort and made it to Round 5! An excellent achievement for the Junior Competition. Akshara made it to Round 3 and James was one of the final 6 students in the 8th Round of the Senior Competition. The tricky words that saw our senior students knocked out of the competition were 'coherent' and 'plenteous'.
Well done to Claire, Jaehee, Akshara and James for representing our school and themselves with pride!
Enrolment at Dundas Public School
There have been some changes to enrolment procedures in all NSW Public Schools. We have been identified as a school who is at capacity as we currently have a considerable number of students enrolled who are not in area.
All schools in a similar situation have been advised that we are not to accept any non-local enrolments unless families can demonstrate 'exceptional circumstances' for enrolment. These applications will go before a panel convened this year by an Assistant Principal and all appeals will be reviewed by the Principal. Before the enrolment can be accepted, the Director Educational Leadership for our school will need to be approached by the Principal in order to consider the application.
Siblings remain the priority but non-local applications still apply and must go to the panel for consideration and recommendations also need to be taken by the Principal to the Director Educational Leadership. This process is designed to ensure all students attend their local school and resources are equitably shared.
This policy has existed for many years, however, the Department of Education have now directed schools that the policy is to be strictly adhered to. I have attached a fact sheet for your information.
Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Dinsdale, School Administrative Manager, or myself if you have any questions or concerns.
Road Safety
Student safety is always our highest priority. This includes the journey on the way to and from school. I have spoken with several concerned parents and neighbours about some incidents that have taken place over the past fortnight.
It has been noted that cars are parking illegally on Kenworthy Street during peak morning and afternoon periods. For the safety of our students and community members, please ensure you are parked safely at all times whilst in the School Zone.
Our teachers have also noted that children are riding scooters and bikes to school without helmets. Wearing a helmet is not a choice - it's the law. A direct report was also made to me, from a parent, about students using their bikes and scooters to 'weave' in and out of parked cars along Calder Road and surrounding streets.
I bring these matters to your attention so that we can work together in partnership to educate our students about road safety. Thank you, in advance, for following up with important conversations at home with your children in regards to safe use of our footpaths and roads.
P&C Colour Fun Run
There's a lot of excitement and hype in the air at Dundas Public School about our upcoming P&C Colour Fun Run! I think our teachers are more excited than our students. The P&C are fundraising towards the purchase and installation of improved playground spaces such as a sensory play area and upgraded equipment.
The Colour Fun Run is being held on the last day of the term, Friday 27th September 2019.
Have a wonderful fortnight!
