LOTE (Mandarin)
Year 1 and 2 children will continue to practise their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Mandarin and reinforce their knowledge of the language and culture in Term One. The term will start with learning and sharing their knowledge about Lunar New Year by singing and taking part in cultural activities. They will also explore an interesting unit called ‘Carnival of the Animals’, in which a contemporary CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach will be applied to develop language acquisition through music, voices and body percussion.

VISUAL ART
In Term 1 our children will be encouraged to build up an understanding of the art elements. They will be encouraged to build upon their understanding of how each material can be used, promote observation, communication, expression and awareness. They will be exposed to a variety of different artists, discussing certain artworks, using a wide range of art forms and art techniques whilst building on their skills and knowledge learnt from previous years. Years 1 and 2 children will be encouraged to share their ideas and thoughts with their classmates when looking at their own and others artworks and they will have the opportunity to display their individual and group artworks within the school.

PERFORMING ARTS
The focus of Term 1 in Performing Arts is all about music. Foundation to Year 6 children will have the opportunity to explore all avenues in this exciting area.
Children in Years 1 and 2 will be exploring the art of drumming circles as they focus on elements of rhythm, tone and tempo. We will explore sounds and silence in our environment and use instruments to recreate these sounds. There will be opportunities to perform for an audience and to collaborate with peers when composing and experimenting with different sounds. Our children will also explore elements of classical music and will be encouraged to think about the ways that music can be used to evoke different feelings.
Later in the yearall children will have the opportunity to participate in a whole school production which is a highlight of our school year. Students in Years 1 – 6 will also have the opportunity to audition and participate in the school choir.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
This term, children in Yewar 1 and 2 will be focusing on developing basic movement and ball handling skills. They will learn to develop their fine motor skills and build on their hand eye coordination. Our children will learn how to contribute to creating class rules and expectations, developing ideas about how to participate in Physical Education in a safe and caring manner.
