Year 12 Student Celebration

Significant moments are often celebrated with family around a table with a meal. This was the case last week when Year 12 students that have been enrolled at LCS from Kinder - Year 12 had a special luncheon. A beautiful meal was provided by our Year 11 & 12 catering students facilitated by Mrs Bain and Mrs Cuthbertson. There was a choice of chicken or salmon and the desserts were absolutely delicious! Thank you to our Head of Senior School, Mrs Fitzallen who coordinates this special event every year and for all those that helped.  Our students loved the attention and enjoyed their time together as they head towards the end of their last year at LCS.

LCS Students partnering with Rotary

Two of our Senior students Asha Filleul & Hannah Socorro are being supported by local Rotary clubs after being chosen to take part in two major programs.  Asha is taking part in the Windeward Bound Trust's Annual Youth Leadership Challenge and will participate in a ten day voyage aboard the STV Windeward Bound.  Supported by Rotary, this brings together students from different backgrounds to promote understanding, inclusiveness and community.    Only twenty young Tasmanian's are chosen to set sail in mid December - well done Asha!  Asha will be fundraising at school in term 4 by providing a sausage sizzle on Thursday 17th October - see the poster for details below.  She was also keen to share her experience so far:

"Earlier this year I had the experience of participating in a 3-day voyage aboard the incredible vessel the Windeward Bound. It was a wonderful adventure and gave me a fresh perspective of community. I then had the privilege of applying for and being awarded the opportunity to participate in the 2019 Youth Leadership Challenge, supporting Tasmanian refugees as a mentor.  We’ll be travelling on the ‘high seas’ for 10 days straight, working as a team. I hope to be a huge encouragement to those on the voyage, helping them to appreciate our beautiful island, adjust to our culture and help them with challenges that may arise along the way, with a smile."

Hannah has been chosen to participate in the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra (ANU) in early January 2020.  NYSF is a 12 day residential program in Canberra and Brisbane designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  Only 17 students were chosen from Tasmania to join the 400+ students in total that participate from around Australia.  There will be a special reception for these Tasmanian students by the Governor of Tasmania in Hobart in a few weeks time.  Hannah will be staying at the Australian National University in Canberra in early January and looks forward to a taste of uni life as well as networking with other students interested in a future career in STEM.

There's lots of activities for students supported by Rotary that you might not be aware of.  For more information on Rotary Youth Projects , please look at the brochure below

NBL1 Team visits LCS

Last week the NBL Blitz team visited our school to play a lunchtime game against our Senior Boys Team.  The gym ended up being packed with student spectators and teachers who loved the basketball action on court.  Our student team enjoyed the thrill of playing against some professional players, testing their skills - what an awesome game it was!  A huge thank you to Mr Ryan Bosker for organising the visit and  West Tamar Council Youth Development Officer Andy Beeston for his umpiring skills.

Visit from Bridget Archer MP - Liberal for Bass

LCS was privileged to have a visit from Mrs Bridget Archer MP, Liberal Member for Bass this week. It was a beautiful, sunny day and a great opportunity to tour our school as well as share why families choose Christian Education for their children. Our Principal Adrian Bosker was joined by Newstead Christian School Principal, Diane Hooley and CEN State Executive Officer (Tasmania) Michael Vos.

Medication Reminder - it's Hay Fever Season!

With Hay fever season approaching, it is important to know that the office does not supply antihistamines for students. However, students are more than welcome to leave their medication at the school office to be used when allergies flare up.  A reminder to all parents that medication must be signed in at the school office in its original packaging and will be administered to students by office staff.

#NotEvenOnce - Teen Challenge Update

From Tanya Cavanagh (Presenter at our recent student talks):

What a privilege it was to spend time with students, staff and parents at Launceston Christian School recently. Our young people are bombarded with so many messages in our society targeting them specifically it can become very confusing and alluring at the same time.

There is no more powerful drive in our current culture than that around drug use, both legal and illegal product. We see alcohol companies actively promoting around sports on TV. Media coverage of conversations around Pill Testing Ecstasy, Medical and Recreation Marijuana legalization, Decriminalization efforts for  substances such as ICE. Online YouTube trends on vaping techniques, #420 and weed.com Facebook feeds and so much more. It simply confuses our young people, waters down the science of substance (licit or illicit) damage to the developing brain (25 females and up to 32 for males), the very real consequences of drug use and creates new markets in both the legal and illegal trades.

Working coalface with individuals and families struggling with addiction we know the reality of substance use and it’s devastating impact on lives. We also know the importance of evidence based education and being real with young people. Resilience building is vital for them to base their own choices on solid, values  and evidence based information.

No one wakes up in the morning and says they want to be a drug addict. That path is created by choices in response to stimuli and it is in that moment of choice that we need to empower young people to choose life and take the best brain health with them for their futures. Our time with LCS students and parents this week was to educate on the very real impacts of substance use to physical, brain and mental health, gain an understanding of the culture around them and drivers within it and build resilience foundations in our young people to make solid choices for their own future. There were great questions asked and conversations had post seminars.  It can be a confronting topic, however the students responded maturely and demonstrated that the presentations certainly got them thinking and more importantly questioning.  We look forward to building upon this initial incursion with LCS students next year and help our precious young people gain the future that was intended for them.

Science Challenge Team thanks more sponsors!

We have been greatly blessed by many local businesses who have continued to partner with our school over the years.  Vos Construction, Tasmania Coachlines and Foot & Playsted are fine examples of this and they have a strong relationship with our school community.  Thank you to Darren Vos, James Yu and Ross Martin as they support our school and particularly our Science & Engineering Challenge Team this year, who head to the National Finals in four weeks time.  Very exciting!

More Science Challenge Fundraising News

On Tuesday the 24th of September, the school held a Science Challenge Team versus staff basketball match and sausage sizzle. It was a huge success with the Science Challenge Team winning 23 to 11. Our sausage sizzle and tuck shop was very successful with all produce sold apart from a few bags of chips and all but 13 sausages in bread sold.  Thank you to WOOLWORTHS for their generous donations towards this fundraising.  Proceeds raised will go towards helping the team fundraise to go to Bunbury WA for National finals. Thanks heaps to all of those involved including the many teachers that played and the parents that helped with the BBQ including Mr Van Winden, Mrs Mason, Mrs Williams, Mrs Lake, Mrs Ferguson and Mrs Chamberlain.

Junior Billy Kart Fun!

This week our Junior School had an awesome time at our annual Billy Kart Derby. Junior students have been making their own billy karts over the last few weeks/months and were rewarded by being able to race them in the car park of Riverside Christian Church. The weather was great and there were some excellent creations and some very colourful designs!   A great way to end a busy Term 3.

Life Skills need your LIDS

Our Life Skills class needs your help and your plastic lids!

As part of their Connecting to the Community Curriculum, Life Skills needs milk bottle tops, soft drink tops and flat water-based tops so they can be recycled and used to make

prosthetic hands for children in need.  This project is run by

Envision Hands, which is a not-for-profit community initiative that uses 3D printing to turn plastic waste into mechanical hands and arms for kids, with the products being sent around the world.  They report that over one million bottle tops have been collected so far, so let's add to that through your donations which can be dropped off at our school office.  For more information, check out the article below.
