I hope you have read some great books you can recommend for the library. Don’t forget to write a quick review and either email to me at jennifer.moss@education.vic.gov.au or bring in when we return on-site!
Here are the last of our '30 reasons to read'.
25: Improves morals
Books help us better discern good ideas from bad ideas. Reading a book allows us to learn about different approaches to life and the problems we face. By doing this, you get an opportunity to discern what has worked in the past and what has not worked. Basically, you learn to make better decisions in life.
26: Learn about your history
History plays an important role in who we are today. By reading books, we get a better understanding of the past and how it continues to affect us. With books, you get a chance to learn about your country, family and the world in general. It’s a great way to revisit your past and appreciate the present.
27: Save money
Apart from being inexpensive, you will also save a lot of money by reading books. Books don’t require electricity, neither do they need any form of maintenance. When you read a book on a certain skill, such as cooking, woodwork, or simple DIY tasks, you save yourself the money you would have used to hire a contractor. You not only learn new skills, but also save yourself a lot of expenses.
28: No side effects of the digital world
Spending too much time watching television or playing video games can affect your eye health in the long run. On the other hand, books are safe and easy. No one has ever gone blind from reading too many books. There are no known side effects or dangers of reading great books.
29: Makes you smarter
With so much to learn from books, people who read regularly tend to be smarter than those who don’t. They tend to have an open mind and are more aware of their surroundings.
30: Books are better than movies
So many movies have been adapted from books. But, if you read a book and then watch its movie, you will agree that the book is 100 times better than the movie. There is always that unique part, like what a character is thinking, that a movie can never capture.
Midnight Sun - Book Review
Just released is this book from the Twilight series which is written from Edward's point of view. See below the interview with author Stephenie Meyer from the Goodreads website.
Tell us a little bit about returning to this series after all this time. Why did you decide it was the right time, and what were you hoping to explore by showing the events of Twilight through Edward's eyes?
It wasn't exactly a return after a long time away. I've been working on Midnight Sun off and on this whole time. It was just a very, very slow story. Of course, there are real-life breaks that interrupt any story, and I've definitely had a ton of those to contend with over such a long period of time, but mainly it was just the story itself. Some stories grab you by the hand and drag you along so quickly you can't type fast enough. And some stories begrudge you every. single. word. This has been the most difficult writing experience I've ever had.
This was the right time to publish because this was when I finally managed to finish. Seriously, I put the publishing process in motion the very second I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I didn't want any more delays. I was well aware that some people were always hoping I'd finally get it done.
In the beginning, I started this project to see the world I'd created through the eyes of a vampire. I wanted to experience the story without the human baggage. There's a kind of high in writing, in being the apex predator for a while.
