This piece was a project we are working on in Art Academy called the 'going, going, gone' project. The aim was to create a piece of art of an endangered animal in the surf coast region. I chose the lead-beaters possum because it is Victorians faunal emblem, but more importantly to make people aware that although they may 'blend in' doesn't mean that they are common and that this particular species are dying out.

Like many Australian animals the lead-beaters Possum is critically endangered because of habitat loss due to bush fires, deforestation and old rotting trees.

In remote learning this term we have been learning about home design. We got to make a house out of things we have at home. It was a very fun experience for me to do this project.

The design of my house is a square house with a flat roof, it also has a verandah out the front of the house. I used moss to represent bushes with little fake flowers on them.

I really enjoyed going outside and finding things that could go in the house. I also enjoyed painting and decorating the house.

My house design was never fully focused on the inside of the house, it was always focused on the outside. It had to have a big backyard and the major thing that was going through my head designing this house was it had to back on to the forest or be in walking distance.

What have you enjoyed most about this project?

Being able to use my imagination to create what I wanted to create.

The following three students would like to share their experiences and strategies for remote learning in response to four questions they were asked:

What sort of brain breaks have you been doing?

Some brain breaks I have been doing are going for walks, watching Netflix, and reading.

What have you been doing for your health and wellbeing?

Some things I have been doing for my health and wellbeing are making sure I go for a walk every day and keeping in contact with my friends.

How or where have you set up your work area?

I have set my work area up on my desk in my room.

What have you done better this time around than last remote learning?

I have managed my time much better this remote learning than the last remote learning.

What sort of brain breaks have you been doing?

As a brain break, I have been going on short walks to a nearby lookout or will listen to music for 5 minutes.

What have you been doing for your health and wellbeing?

I have been going for frequent walks with family to maintain a state of personal health and wellbeing.

How or where have you set up your work area?

I have set up my work area at a desk in my bedroom that is quiet and calm so I can better focus on my schoolwork.

What have you done better this time around than last remote learning?

This time during remote learning for me has been very similar to our last round. I have been alternating days where I have a heavier workload and days where I tackle the smaller tasks that are easier to knock over quickly. I will timetable all tasks for the week on a Monday, then progress through the week similarly to how I would when at school.

Year 11 - Mental Health First Aid

Year 11 students were offered the opportunity to complete some mental health first aid training earlier in the term. With the difficulties of remote learning and current stage 3 COVID-19 restrictions, mental health issues have become an even more significant issue that the school is planning for. Alice Howard, one of our Year 11 leaders, attended the course and commented ‘we found it incredibly engaging and interesting, we got a lot out of it and feel better equipped to help’. The school will continue to provide information and assist students with their mental health and are looking into running additional certified training sessions for students when school returns.

Year 12 - Remote Learning

As the end of the year is quickly approaching, we now move our attention to finalising outcomes and start to look towards revision. Year 12 teachers are running one-hour revision classes for students in all of their subjects, a link to the Revision Timetable for these can be found by clicking here.

After the success following last week’s assembly which specifically looked at VTAC, we will be having another assembly next Wednesday at 10:30am which will be focusing on preparing students for the GAT (General Achievement Test). Given the indifferent year that it has been the GAT is mostly going to be used more significantly than ever for assisting with the calculation of students’ ATAR scores so it is highly recommended for students to attend in order to best prepare themselves for the GAT which is scheduled to be run on Wednesday 7th of October during the first week back of Term 4. Students will be sent a link to this assembly in their morning announcement posts from their teachers next Wednesday.

We as teachers understand that remote learning has presented its fair share of challenges for students throughout this year. We remind students that if they are feeling overwhelmed or unsure of what tasks they need to do, to reach out and contact their subject teachers for support. We are all more than happy to offer support to you all, but can’t if we don’t know that you need it. Good luck for the remainder of Term 3.

I’ve been onsite looking after the students who are learning at school. I was able to get the materials for this week’s  Science activity “Making a Catapult”.

The students used icy pole sticks and rubber bands to make their catapults, which they then used to launch mini marshmallows into the air. They had a lot of fun competing to see who could launch their marshmallow the furthest. Well done to Year 7 students Thomas, Layla, Phoenix and Alex
