Year 1/2 News

Welcome
Welcome back to another wonderful week of remote learning. We are continuing to be impressed by how enthusiastically students' engage with our Zoom meetings, online learning tasks and discussions. Students have excitedly engaged in our silly hat parade and showed off some terrific dance moves in our Friday morning move and groove session! While remote learning continues to provide some challenges, we are impressed with the dedication and perseverance our students have shown, learning valuable life skills which will continue to support their ongoing learning.
We ask that your child continues to attend all Zoom sessions (including both Guided Reading clinics and their additional Focus Child Zoom) each week. These sessions are planned to explicitly target student's individual learning goals. We ask that if your child is unable to attend a Zoom, that you please email your child's teacher.
It is wonderful to see some students starting their school routines before our morning Zoom. We do ask however, that students do not complete the daily focus task (the task to be uploaded for the day) before our Zoom, as we explicitly teach this in our morning session.
Literacy
Over the past fortnight, students have continued to explore Non-fiction texts in Literacy. Students have successfully identified the difference between facts and opinions and have created informative texts about a chosen animal. The teachers certainly learnt a lot about the different habitats, diet, appearance and interesting facts of animals (like Sloths, Giraffes and Anacondas!)
Continuing our informational writing and in preparation for Father's Day, students in Year 1/2 have begun writing a piece about their Dad's or a special person. Students have worked hard to include adjectives to describe their Dad's and their appearance. We are sure that these will provide a great read on Sunday!
Students have revised creative writing and have continued to experiment with word choice. It was terrific to see students creating texts which included an orientation, problem, sequence of events and a resolution. In one particular task, students were given the opportunity to finish a story which was started by the Year 1/2 teachers. Funnily enough, the teachers throughout the school appeared heavily in the stories (like Cool Colosi, Sweet Sbizzirri, Humourous Howard and Darting Downing!) - as well as viruses, NBN issues and power blackouts.
Mathematics
Over the past fortnight, students have continued to practice skip counting and identify the place value of numbers.
Students in Year 1 created their very own addition machines to help add numbers, while students in Year 2 explored multiplication as repeated addition.
In our current unit of Location and Mapping, students have practiced and explored giving and following directions. Students created obstacle courses, designed their own Zoo and developed treasure maps of hidden treasures around the home!
Personal Passion Projects (PPP's)
It is terrific to see the effort, creativity and persistence being put into students’ PPP’s. Students have continued to explore topics of personal interest and have showcased their learning in a chosen way.
Topics of interest to students at the moment include abstract art, soccer, writing, horse riding, dog tricks and dinosaurs. Some of the PPP’s have even inspired other students (and teachers) to find out more! We look forward to continuing to see, share and learn more!
Please find attached some examples of our wonderful Year 1/2 students' work. You may even catch a sneak peek of a future presenter, author or scientist!
