Maths around the kitchen table

Parents play an important role in a child's mathematical understandings. It is important for parents and children to work together on mathematical challenges which can be touched, built and seen. Parents modelling good mathematical thinking aloud, demonstrates appropriate thinking and skills which students then apply to their own thinking. The conversation and interaction involved in working on mathematical problems together can support the development of problem solving skills, mathematical skills and literacy skills.

Here are two examples which you might like to try together. These can be explored over the dinner table or left on the bench to be added to a little bit at a time.

Remember an important part of the learning when completing these together is the thinking. Do this thinking out loud, modelling questions you may ask yourself, strategies you might try or even how you overcome struggles or errors.
