Year 5/6 News

Welcome

As this extraordinary term moves into it's latter stages we are very aware of the fact that the students will be fatiguing and needing some variety and excitement in their learning. As a result we are looking to change things up in the final few weeks, with a virtual camp planned for the beginning of Week 10. The camp will include some of the activities that we had planned for our Urban Camp in Term 2, but of course will be done virtually due to the current restrictions. We hope that this will provide the students with a level of anticipation and excitement as we draw towards the end of term.

We have also been conscious of the Year 6's losing contact with their Foundation Buddies during the year and so we have just held a "Buddy Day" to try and continue that connection. As you would imagine this is also an incredibly important experience for the Foundation students at this time also.

Thank you again for the ongoing support we are receiving from you all. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Our contact details are at the bottom of the page.

Reading

Over the last couple of weeks the students have been practising Critiquing a text. Along with Analysing this is a skill where students think about the text and respond to questions. When looking at a fiction text the students consider how effective it is in various areas such as character, plot, theme and craft. For a non-fiction text some of the areas the students are asked to critique include the organisation of information, accuracy and style. Last week the students were asked to critique a text called Adrift and considered questions such as "what would you change about the story?" and "how effectively does the clip communicate the message or theme of the story?"

Maths

In weeks 6 & 7, the Year 5/6 students studied the concept of Length. Students participated in a range of clinics from choosing appropriate units of measurement to

calculating the perimeter of different shapes, connecting decimal representations to the metric system and converting between common metric units. Some students delved into the Year 8 curriculum to investigate the features of a circle and solved problems by determining the radius, diameter and circumference from each other.

This week, students will move into Area followed by Shape for the remaining weeks of Term Three.

Maths Olympiad

On 16th September, the 2020 Maths Olympiad team, will compete in the final competition for the year. Students will add ‘Divide a complex shape’ and ‘Convert to a more convenient form’ to their growing bank of problem solving strategies!

Writing

After many weeks of research, planning, drafting, editing and re-drafting, we are finally proud to present the Read Aloud Presentations of a biography of a person of interest. We hope you enjoy hearing some interesting information about people from many walks of life. The way these stories have been written and told captures the essence of who the person is/was.
