Student Reading at Home

A message from the Literacy Team

How is you child going with reading at home? It is important for all students to continue their reading practices during this period of remote learning. A minimum 20 minutes reading per day allows students to grow and develop their reading comprehension skills, develop their vocabulary and their understanding of the world.

Students might be finding it tricky to get their hands on new reading material, did you know you can create a digital membership for the Melton Library? This will give you access to some of the library’s digital catalogue which can be accessed on student devices. This link will take you to the library’s online registration information https://www.melton.vic.gov.au/Out-n-About/Libraries-and-learning/Libraries/Join-the-library/Join-the-library.

There are also many free, digital sites for reading that we are sharing with students via google classrooms.

Students in years 7 – 9 are also expected to complete reading journal entries as they read their Just Right Text. This work allows students to show their thinking and development of key literacy strategies through ‘thinking tracks.’ Each week the reading journal entries are a learning interaction for English. This short video provides some pointers on how to complete a ‘thinking track’ in a reading journal
