MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER

Hello everyone at Collingwood College.

My name is Michele Waters and I am the new Mental health Practitioner here. I am very excited to be joining your school community.

I am at Collingwood College every Friday and Tuesdays in even weeks of the school term.

On Mondays, I will be at the Collingwood Alternative School. My email address is michelew@collingwood.vic.edu.au

I worked as a School Psychologist in Canberra and before that, as a School Counsellor in NSW.

I became increasingly interested in youth mental health and well-being when I was a High School teacher. When my family moved to Sydney, I took the opportunity to study Psychology in order to work in schools in this role.

I am looking forward to working with you in the future.

Michele Waters

OUR MUSIC DEPARTMENT IS GROWING

I’d like to warmly welcome four new instrumental music teachers to Collingwood College.

Claire Fischer joined our Strings Program in Term 3. Claire has many years of experience teaching violin and viola and she has a large private teaching studio. Claire is an accredited Suzuki teacher but is fully versed in traditional teaching methods and adapts her teaching to the needs of each student. Claire is also a performer. She was for many years a member of the Strad String Quartet. She also toured internationally and recorded with the Emaline Delapaix Band. We’re delighted to have Claire join us and take on so many students.

In Term 4, we also have three new teachers joining us (guitar, singing and piano). All three teachers look forward to getting to know continuing music students. All three teachers also have spaces available for new students and would love to hear from anyone wanting to start music lessons in Term 4.

Please get in touch with me (margueriteb@collingwood.vic.edu.au) if you would like more information.

Gerard Mapstone teaches guitar and brings a wealth of experience to teaching both classical and contemporary music. He is currently also teaching guitar at the University of Melbourne and Sophia Mundi Steiner School. Gerard’s love of all music spans many multicultural collaborations and contemporary arts streams, and he brings this to his teaching, offering students to opportunity to learn guitar in many different styles. He has a holistic approach to education and mindfulness for each student.

Gerard has an extensive performance career specialising in Flamenco guitar (the subject of his PhD research), Jazz and Classical guitar. He has performed as support act on world tours with the Buena Vista Social Club, Cyndi Lauper, Tomatito and Estrella Morente; and as a featured artist at many national music festivals and folk fests around the country as well as the Barbican Theatre in London.

Kirti Mills teaches singing and song writing. She is a musician with over 25 years experience in performance, singing, song writing, choir direction and private tuition. A love of languages and contemporary and folk music styles has influenced her own repertoire. In 2014 Kirti graduated from Melbourne Polytechnic with a Bachelor of (Contemporary) Music.

Kirti can offer students the opportunity to develop their awareness of and confidence in their individual voice; strong aural skills (e.g. scale and interval recognition, improvisation); voice care and technique, warm-up exercises; music theory and singing confidently in other languages. Kirti can also coach students who want to work on original material, covers and vocal harmony while accompanying themselves on their other instruments.

Mizuki Oyama has been playing the piano for over 30 years. She accompanied choirs and bands in Tokyo before she moved to Australia. Now she has a home studio where she teaches piano privately. Mizuki’s teaching style is encouraging, patient, dynamic, flexible, and fun! Her lessons are tailored to each student’s needs and interests.

Mizuki says “Teaching piano is one of my greatest joys. I believe we are all musical and I love sharing my knowledge and techniques with my students and seeing them flourish. I am also fluent in Japanese, so if a student feels more comfortable or wishes to have lessons in Japanese, that’s available too.”
