Encouraging all Year 12s to apply for further study

Considering the current economic climate, we strongly advocate for all year 12 students to apply for further study next year.  With the employment market under immense pressure, and travel being an unlikely option, it’s a good time to get started on a course of study which will open up more connections and opportunities for your future career.

Year 12 students and families are reminded that we would like all VTAC applications for study in 2021 to be completed before the end of term three

Students will still be able to modify their preferences (for most courses) up until 4 January 2021. At this stage students should list in their preference any courses with early closing dates, and courses they are interested in for next year.

Students who do not plan to apply for courses via VTAC for 2021 need to communicate with their tutor as to what their plans are.

If you need to discuss how to apply, courses, or other plans for next year you can make an appointment for a chat via the Careers page on MYNHS.  By working proactively together we will be able to support students to make a smooth and meaningful transition from NHS.

Reminder: VTAC 2021 Upcoming Key Dates

NHS goal for completed VTACFriday 18 September 2020
Timely applications through VTACWednesday 30 September 2020
SEAS applications closeFriday 9 October 2020

Also, students applying for courses that have essential requirements (i.e. submitting a folio, a pre-selection kit, arranging an interview, etc.) are reminded that failure to meet the deadline date for these means students may no longer be eligible for selection into their desired course.

Students eligible to apply for SEAS are also encouraged to apply for VTAC Scholarships.

Pandemic experience helps students develop employability skills

When I started working in school I don’t think I could have imagined a year like we are having.  Perceptions of schools are often of slow-moving and unwieldy organisations, and staff and students are not always perceived in the most positive terms by the wider public.

The experience of this year for me has given me plenty of cause to question these perceptions.

A school without infrastructure for remote learning has managed to respond quickly to pivot to a whole new way of fostering learning and maintaining strong connections to students, families and communities.  Our students have proven their resilience and determination in moving forward, despite the many challenges the circumstances of 2020 have thrown at them.

Compare the response of our school community to the skills that employers are looking for:  Communication, Problem Solving, Teamwork, Organisation, Motivation, Resilience, Leadership, Initiative, Using Technology, Confidence, Ability to Work Under Pressure.  Whatever knowledge that students are learning this year is accompanied by a skills-building exercise the likes of which has never been seen before in schools!

Enjoy the holiday break everyone, and I look forward to seeing you (either at school or remotely) in Term Four.
