What’s in a genre? Check out Visual Search

Library staff have been busy expanding the search functions on the John Cain library webpage, to make locating fiction by genre easier.  A genre is a style, category or subject in literature that groups specific titles together, like science fiction or dystopian novels. Organising our fiction by genre or 'genrefying' can help students to find books they enjoy more easily. Visual Search provides an electronic genrefication system that allows students to easily browse the different genres online by clicking image tiles, and to see what titles are available and what's on loan.  To view the libraries new Visual Search tool, visit the John Cain library webpage.

When you click on the Visual Search tab, the different genre tiles will appear. Select the genre you would like to explore by clicking on that tile. Some genre tiles will have subcategory tiles. For example, Historical fiction, has World War I and World War II subcategories.

We have selected the humour tiles in the example below, you’ll see there are 49 titles listed in this genre.  The titles with a green dot are available, the ones with a red dot are on loan, but can be reserved.    To navigate back to the visual search home page, you can click the Visual Search tab on the menu bar or move back and forwards in visual search by clicking on the submenu bar - see arrow.
