Then & Now

This is Mr Scully as a young boy. He was five or six at the time and was visiting his aunt and uncle in their Inverell home in country New South Wales.

Inverell occupies a special place in Mr Scully’s heart. His mum grew up there and although Mr Scully lived in Sydney, as a child he spent holidays and as much time as possible in Inverell. He always preferred country life to the hustle and bustle of the city and he still does.

Mr Scully has a close bond with his uncle from Inverell and he credits him for encouraging and cultivating his love of cars and motorbikes. Visits to Inverell as a child, and now as an adult, involve family time and many conversations about motorbikes and modified cars.

The bulk of Mr Scully’s secondary schooling was spent at boarding school in Goulburn. After he completed Year 12 he worked with his father in Sydney to obtain his building qualification. Soon after this he met his wife, Angela, in Melbourne. They lived in Sydney for a short time and although they were planning to move to Melbourne, they got ‘lost on the way’ and ended up residing in Auckland for six years. Eventually they moved back to Melbourne and they currently live in Mitcham.

Mr Scully still has a strong connection to Inverell. His aunt and uncle are in their 80s and he tries to visit them once a year. He’d love to move there in his retirement, but he’s not sure he can convince his wife to make the move, because although Angela likes the country life, as Mr Scully says, ‘Inverell is a bit too country for her.’ Mr Scully loves working at Healesville High School and intends to stay around for a long time (a bit like Mr Swankie). He is looking at a future move to somewhere like Alexandra or Yea, so he can still make the commute to work. Ideally, he would like a good size block, with a small house and a massive shed.

Good luck Mr Scully and thanks for sharing!
