Hidden Talent

Another week, another hidden talent. We are still sitting in the art space this edition, but this time we are talking rap music with none other than Corey “Scumro” Munro.

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us Corey, before we go any further I need to know is there a story behind the name Scumro?

No not really, I was just bored a couple of years ago, before I even started my music actually. I just made it my name on Instagram and it kind of stuck, obviously it’s also kind of a play on my name as well.

What inspires your music?

Ummmm, honestly my biggest inspiration is probably my favourite artist (Aus rapper) Kerser or my mate Sean Rolfink, he is also chasing his music dreams. My friend group have definitely helped guide and support me.

Does rapping take talent and skill?

Yeah I think it does take talent, there are a lot of people out there that can rhyme words and sometimes the misconception is that is all rapping is. For me there is so much more to it. When you break down rap there are a lot more aspects that come into it like, word play and references and all that sort of stuff and that’s not even taking into account the beat and the music side of things. Even your pronunciation and vocab needs to be good so people can understand your story and what you are actually saying, it all needs to be clear.

When I write music I speak completely from experience, so I just use what I have lived and what I know to create my music. I think there are definitely people that have natural talent when it comes to rapping and others that really have to work and try hard, like anything else in life I guess.

What has been the most exciting part of your music journey so far?

Probably dropping my first music video. The whole things was just such an awesome experience, good environment, surrounded by mates, it was so good.

What keeps you going?

Life, I think. Everything that happens around me kind of allows me to draw on for inspiration, I just kind of go with the flow at the moment. I can and will write about anything, if I’m feeling something emotionally or physically I can use it, so that keeps me going when it comes to my music I guess.

Are there certain times that you write or when it comes do you have to get it down in the moment?

Yeah when it comes to me, that is I go flat out. I can't think too hard about it, if I sit down and go “oh I need to write” i'll end up writing rubbish. When the words come to me though it all just flows out and before I even realise I have a whole song done. When it comes to me that’s when I need to deal with it.

What is coming next for you and your music?

I’m not really sure, honestly, I just want to know that people can relate to me. Knowing people connect with my music is enough, I don’t really care so much about making it, I just do it for myself.

Are we a chance to ever hear any of your tracks on Triple J Unearthed or anything like that?

Yeah I have thought about it, I have spoken to them and was supposed to upload a track I just haven’t got around to it yet.

(Shocked gasp)

Yeah I know, I’m pretty bad with that sort of stuff, I was supposed to upload a track on another platform as well, but I ended up with a licence I couldn’t use and it all got a bit draining.

Thanks for joining us Scumro! Congratulations on the release of your music video ‘Airing Out’. You can check out his work on YouTube, SoundCloud and Instagram. Can’t wait to jump in the car and hear you on the radio one day (the clean edit of course)!
