Secondary 9/10 PreCAL

Community Experience

Week 6 was our group change over week. Students are now participating in their second and final group for the term. The Science group explored Scienceworks, the Recreation group went bushwalking in Plenty Gorge and the Arts/Cultural group explored Art Play at Birrarung Marr.

English

In reading the PreCAL classes have explored making personal connections to the texts they read. This has been supported through the use of the texts we create after the Community Experience Days which have images of the students in them.

In writing the PreCAL classes have been working on revising and editing their work to improve their piece of writing. They have been reading their texts aloud and adding illustrations and diagrams to support the meaning of their text.

Mathematics

In Maths the PreCAL classes have moved onto Subtraction and are working on the concept of the number of items or objects getting smaller. We have discussed the language used in subtraction such as less, how many are left, taking away etc. In volume and capacity classes have been investigating the concept of full, empty and half full/half empty.

Social Competencies

Recently in Social Competency we’ve finished up our Personal Learning unit. Students have completed work about our school values of being a learner, being safe, being responsible and being respectful. We also looked at what makes someone a good learner and made a poster with some of these features such as good listening skills, organisation and problem solving. Before doing these tasks, students have decided as a team what materials they need and what steps should be taken to complete the task. This has helped all students to be more independent and responsible for their work. Well done 9/10!

STEAM

STEAM in PreCAL has switched focus to Science and chemical change. All of the classes are exploring the properties of different materials including solids, liquids and gases and how materials can change between the different states through the process of heating and cooling. The classes will be working hard each week to create some products which will be sold at our Christmas Concert at the end of term.
