The year ahead

What's ahead for Year 10

2018 has commenced with the Year 10 students at Healesville High School looking forward to a busy year of academic rigour, work related skills development, co-curricular activities and camps, just to name a few opportunities on offer. As the cohort moves into the senior school, students are encouraged to further develop in maturity and to regard Year 10 as a lead-in to VCE studies for most, and an opportunity for others to explore a more work orientated course in VCAL. It’s a time for students to become more independent; in learning and accepting responsibility for decisions made.

Year 10 is an exciting year where students are consolidating learning at school, establishing good study habits and routines, but also looking outward to the big world out there. This year students will attend a driver education course, work experience placement, will have the opportunity to go interstate to Queensland or sign up to travel further afield to Asia for the World Challenge 2019. It is a time in life where some are gaining part-time employment and others are making links with the broader community through sporting clubs and community service groups.

Students in Year 10 are encouraged to fully immerse themselves in school life and to take up the opportunities on offer in sport, arts, music and theatre. Auditions are currently underway for this year’s school production and I encourage those inclined to get involved, whether it be in the band, cast or backstage crew.

I would also like to wish Jinja Shub in Year 10 a fantastic time in Japan where he will be participating in a student exchange program which I’m sure will be the experience of a life time.

If parents and guardians have any queries about anything related to their Year 10 student, please don’t hesitate to contact the Year 10 Coordinator, Shane Coady, via the school office or Compass.

A Note from the Music Department

Already the Music Program has been very busy with Legends performing at the Year 7 Information Evening and they are now busily preparing for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service. The newly formed Rising Stars Band has begun rehearsals. This group includes a number of Year 7 students who have carried on  playing their instrument from Healesville Primary School as well as the Year 8 students who were part of the Rookie band last year and one Year 9 student.

Andrew, Josh and myself along with some help from the senior students have been demonstrating and giving all Year 7 students the opportunity to trial the different instruments over the past 3 weeks.

The 2018 Rookie band has now been formed with over 20 students beginning their musical journey at HHS. They began lessons last week and their first after school band rehearsal is Tuesday 6th March. The Rookie band also has their very first performance this term on Thursday 22nd March to show their parents how much they have learnt in just five weeks of playing music!

That’s not all we have been up to this year! The students heading to New Zealand on a combined tour with Melba College have had their first rehearsal of the year and the Brass Ensemble, Jazz Band and Sax Ensemble have all been rehearsing preparing for the next concert!
