Humans of Warrnambool

This year the year 8 English classes have been working on a new unit this year called ‘Humans of Warrnambool’, inspired by Brandon Stanton’s famous Facebook site and blog ‘Humans of New York’. The task was designed for students to develop empathy and understanding about those around them while learning about the importance of storytelling. We used Brandon Stanton’s own interviews to discuss voice, tone, inference, interviewing skills, questioning and editing, then students unleashed their knowledge on their lucky interviewees- who are all member of our amazing community.

The final product has been heart-warming. Students found out the challenges, highlights and important moments of those close to them and their work has gone up around the school as a collective celebration of the humans around us.

SPP Fitness Testing

Last week SPP students from years 7 to 11 travelled to Ballarat to participate in fitness testing conducted by Federation University. Each student was individually tested on their 20 metre sprint, agility, vertical jump, and aerobic fitness.

Their results will be used as a starting point for the year, measuring their ‘pre’ fitness abilities, as well as supplying data as a comparison to lasts years testing.

Each SPP class will travel to Ballarat again later in the year to see how much they have improved.

Outdoor Education Excursion

Year 12 Outdoor and Environmental studies classes combined forces on Monday 13th and headed to Forrest in the Otways National Park for the annual Mountain Biking expedition. With Mr Hall steering the ship (or bus) we hit the road and made our way, albeit a little slower than usual given the roadworks we encountered enroute. We arrived and conditions were perfect as we took to the trails to improve our skills, develop our knowledge and have a great time.

The morning session consisted of a warm up loop in and around the township of Forrest, starting up near Lake Elizabeth, rolling across the West Barwon Reservoir and back down to the beginnings of the Barwon River. After lunch we upped our game a headed to the Yaughter trail head which involved some serious down-hill mountain biking terrain.

All students tackled the sections head on and held their nerve as tracks wound through heavily forested areas, up and over exposed rock and root systems and up and down some major hills. Everyone had a fantastic day, the trip will no doubt go down as one of the highlights in the Outdoor Ed year. Well done to all students who took part.
