Lions Club Disbursement Dinner:

We are very lucky to have such a strong connection with the Healesville Lions Club.

In addition to the wonderful work they do with our Leo club, they are also generous supporters of our school. Recently the Lions Club held their annual disbursement dinner. Every year, a range of local schools and community groups are given the opportunity to apply for a funding grant from the Lions Club. Successful groups are then invited to attend the disbursement dinner, where they receive funds for various projects. The funding for these grants primarily comes from the Lions Club Opportunity Shop in Healesville, which is managed and staffed by volunteers.

At the recent dinner we were fortunate to receive two grants. We received $2000 to go towards the upkeep of our musical instruments, something that is vital to ensure the continued success of our music program. Our Leo club were also fortunate enough to receive $500 towards their ongoing fundraising for a shade sail.

Healesville High School were represented by Eliza Hoiles, Taylah Chipperfield, Eve Burt and Edie Gales-Smith. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity shown by the Lions Club and we are proud of our ongoing connection with this group.

Easter Regional Library Partnership

We have started a partnership with Eastern Regional Libraries and we are excited about the educational opportunities available for our students through the library. Libraries are no longer what they used to be! As was indicated by the recent visit from Jasminder and Chelsea from Eastern Regional Libraries. Libraries have evolved from being simply about books to including all things related to communication in the modern world.

Jasminder and Chelsea ran engaging sessions with each of our Year 7 classes. Students were given an orientation to the services offered by the library via the use of their library card. Many students were surprised to know they can access a service similar to Netflix via the library catalogue- free of charge! They also learnt about accessing eBooks, eMagazines and a range of aps relevant to their learning.

In addition to the orientation session, they also allowed students to experiment with their ozobots- tiny robots that are controlled by codes entered by students. It was great to see how quickly students developed their coding skills and how much fun they had playing with the ozobots. Students also experimented with an animation program and they were able to create their own game, cartoon and label. The Year 7s were having so much fun that they didn’t even realise they were learning!

All Year 7 students were given their own library card as part of the visit. This means students can now access the range of resources provided by Eastern Regional Libraries. We encourage all students to become familiar with the library and explore the available digital resources. If students are having difficulty using their library card, they should see Maidi Mitchell in our library (Monday- Wednesday).

Eastern Regional Libraries have also invited our participation in two other upcoming events. On August 14, 4 students will be accompanying Ms Benham to a Women in Science breakfast. Three days later, twenty Year 7s will be spending  the day at Lilydale Library to celebrate Book Week. We look forward to these events and our continued connection with Easter Regional Libraries.
