Head of the River

The sun was shining and the water was choppy at Lake Barrington as rowers, spectators and many supporters undertook the drive on Saturday 17 March to the annual Head of the River Regatta. It was a successful season for the Open girls, as for

the 4th consecutive year they were undefeated in the Open girls eight race. Other successful achievements from the Open girls include Mimi Morgan placing 1st in the A final of the single skull, Gabrielle Larson placed 1st in the B final of the single skull by 16 seconds. The Open boys had a steady start to the season as well and improved with every race and ultimately had a successful season. The boys placed 4th in the Opens 8 race as well as in the Firsts Quad Skull. Both the boys and girls in the Under 16 crew had a strong and consistent season. With the boys placing 4th in the Firsts U16 eight and the girls placing 4th in the U16 Firsts Quad Scull. The U15 boys and girls both had some great outcomes at the regatta as the boys placed 2nd in the Firsts Quad and the girls placed 3rd in the Firsts Double Scull. The U14 and U13 rowing crews also produced some solid results throughout the season and are eager for the many rowing seasons ahead of them.

The rowing season wasn’t quite done for our Open girls as they flew to Penrith, NSW to compete at the Australian Rowing Championships. The girls Eight placed 5th in a nail-biting photo finish ending in the Under 19 A final and placed 6th in the school girls A final. During the 500m sprint the girls produced the fastest overall time by 5 seconds, but unfortunately the final was cancelled due to a thunderstorm.

JSSATIS Swimming Carnival

The JSSATIS Swimming Carnival was held at the Hobart Aquatic Centre on Thursday 22 March. Morris selected 38 swimmers from Year 3-6 to participate. All children competed to the best of their ability with many gaining places and PB’s.

Congratulations to our Year 5 Boys 4x50m Freestyle Relay team who broke the record in their event, this same team has broken the record in both Year 3 and Year 4, so the challenge is definitely on for 2019.

We also recognise both the Girl and Boy Medley relay teams, which were made up of the best swimmers in breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and freestyle from Year 5 & 6. The Friends’ School managed to collect 1st place in both these events.

Well done to all our competitors!
