Staff Profile
Marty Crerar
Drama Teacher
How long ago did you join The Friends' School?
I started teaching at Friends’ in the year 2000, just after I graduated as a teacher. I then took time out to go to Drama school in Melbourne, then returned to teaching in the Catholic system, and then five years at a boys school in Canberra. I came back to Tassie and to Friends’ one year ago.
What are you excited about this year?
Shrek The Musical Junior will be a definite highlight in May, as it is exciting to work with students and colleagues from different parts of the School. I am also excited about all the Drama classes and the work we will be doing. Generally, I love teaching and am excited about all the learning happening, including my own. I am trying to learn to run and am very inspired by some of my super running colleagues who are doing half marathons. Maybe doing the City to Casino with my son, and am aiming to do the Burnie 10 later in the year.
When did you know you wanted to become a teacher?
I was in Finland, as an AFS exchange student just after I finished Year 12. My neighbour was an English teacher who went around the kindergartens teaching English to 5-year-olds, and I started helping. I loved it and realised the rewarding experience that is helping people learn. Drama was my favourite subject at school so that’s why I chose it as my specialisation.
Where is your favourite place in the world?
Tasmania! Canada is second because my brother lives there. Paris is my favourite city.
Why Friends?
Because everyone matters here, all students, all teachers, all the community - and we find the best in each other.
Who is your "hero"?
My children - all three of them - they inspire and challenge me, they giggle, laugh and care for each other, and they are my biggest joy and purpose.
