Prep- Year 3 News from Mrs Lightburn

In maths, we have been looking at gathering data by asking questions and then putting this information onto a column or picture graph. The children enjoyed going around and asking everyone their questions.

We are now looking at telling the time using an analogue and digital clock so it would be great if they could practice o’clock and half-hour times over the holidays ready to carry on next Term.

Our Communities Topic has finished and we have looked at types of communities in Australia (rural, urban or suburban) and then what it was like to live 100 years ago and today. Not many of the children thought school was much fun back then or all the chores they had to do at home would be far too hard.

Last week some of the students in the grade tested their measuring and cooking skills to make afternoon tea for everyone. They made a batch of delicious scones, by following a procedural text (in this case a recipe). They had a lot of fun and also made quite the mess- including some light dusting of their own clothes!

Year 4,5,6 News from Mr Collins

Mr Collins and the three Year Six students went to the East Loddon Community Centre to pack grocery boxes donated by Foodshare.  The three boys were shown the right way to organise the goods and then separated, sorted and packed 21 boxes for our  school community.

News from Miss Coffey

Drama

During weeks 8 and 9, students have been enjoying a variety of activities. A new activity we tried was called ‘mirroring’. This is where you follow your partner’s actions like they are looking in a mirror. It’s quite a challenge for your brain to use the opposite hand/arm etc! We also continued to enjoy acting out more Fairy Stories, including The Three Little Pigs and Jack and the Beanstalk.

Writing Grade 4’s

In week 8, the Grade 4’s wrote a quick reflection on their experiences on camp. We wrote about ‘our favourite thing’ and ‘something we found challenging’. In week 9, we continued our work with Information Reports, writing our own introduction and first paragraph on the ‘koala’.

Maths Grade 4’s

Over the past two weeks, the Grade 4’s have been practising their Times Tables on the iPad using an app called Smart Maths. We’ve been working specifically on the 2’s, 5’s, 9’s, 10’s and 11’s. We have also been looking to hone our skills with subtraction when borrowing is required e.g. 3,456-1,927.

Cluster Science Day

Next Wednesday our school will be the venue for the Campaspe Small Schools Cluster Science Day. This day is traditionally ran  and hosted by Elmore Primary, but given that we have such an expansive space to host the students and staff from the six cluster schools, we are the venue for this year! We can not wait to show off our modern classrooms and learning spaces, expansive grounds and extensive facilities- they will all be envious I am sure!

Our students will be in mixed groups and rotate around six different science activities on the day. This is a great opportunity for our students to mix with their cluster buddies and have exposure to different teachers from the other schools.

We are very excited to be hosting this day and can not wait to share the photos with you on our school Facebook Page.

Kelly Sports

With the grade 4's away on camp, Coach Beau and James from Kelly Sports still attended to introduce and guide the remaining students in the techniques and skills required to play touch rugby. This was the first time any of the students had attempted to play this game but in the end, they got the hang of it and had a great time dodging, sprinting, weaving and backward passing. Mrs Lightburn, our resident rugby expert was very impressed.

MARC Library News from Mrs Gentry

Book Week Celebrations

Last Thursday we celebrated Book Week on our MARC Day and it was so wonderful to have all of our students and staff dress up for the occasion. It is such a great reminder that books impact our lives and a wonderful way to show each other what some of our favourite stories are. Below are some pictures from the day.

Music

Next weeks sees us complete our music sessions with our mentor teacher,  Rosie Savage. We have loved having Rosie come to lead us through music sessions each week this term. Our students have learnt how to keep a beat, respond to music (of all different genres), all about percussion instruments as well as how to create music of their own.

Last week Rosie bought in her french horn and talked to the students about her own experience of being in an orchestra. The students loved listening to Rosie play.
