SCIENCE WEEK

2022

2022 NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

The school theme for National Science Week in 2022 was:

Glass: More than meets the eye

It was based on the UN International Year of Glass. It endeavored to celebrate the m

any roles that glass plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs – plus investigating glass as a part of our sustainable future.

Here at St Joseph’s we got into the spirit of Science Week by devoting a day to rotational, Prep to Six Science based activities. The activities were accessible, intrinsically engaging and naturally, sought to bring out the ‘Science’ involved in them.

“ In the preppies’ room we did an experiment about clouds. So we put shaving cream in a glass jar filled with water.  We also added food dye and we used a straw to pick it up and put it in the glass. It was exciting and interesting. I didn’t know this, rain comes down and if it’s really hot goes back up”. Millie Floyd  by MLT

“ We learnt how glass can make sound when you put water in the glass and you run your fingers around the glass. It will make a humming noise”. Joshua Tame by MA

“I liked doing the dancing sultanas activity. In the water, nothing happened except that it expanded a little. In the soda water the sultanas started to dance. In the vinegar and baking soda solution, the sultanas tried to jump out of the cup”.  by James Elliott by MLT
