PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE...

I have a few staff whom I would like to thank for organising some recent events at St Joey's.  The dedication of our staff to our students is what makes St Joey's such a special place.  The manner in which each and every staff member 'goes the extra mile' to provide opportunities for our students to participate in such a huge variety of activities is to be commended.

Book Week Science Week

Last week we celebrated Book Week.  This was a huge success thanks to the work that Lauren Greenlaw put into organising the event.  Please see the 'Book Week 2022' for feedback from the children and some brilliant pics of the dress-up day.

Thanks again Lauren!!

Science Week

We also recently celebrated Science Week.  This was equally successful thanks to Peter Zammit's organisation.  Peter has prepared some student feedback on Science Week with some great pictures of the students participating in the variety of science experiments that were on offer.

Thanks again Pete!!

This year was our inaugural participation in the Prime Minister's Spelling Bee.  We had a massive number of 48 students choose to participate in this event.  Thanks to Angela Stamellos for organising this - I'm sure it will be equally popular next year!!

Father's Day

This Thursday, September 1, the Social Club will be holding our Father's Day Stall. Children will be able to purchase gifts ranging from $2 - $10 for their fathers, grandfathers or special 'elder' in their lives.   Thanks to Jo and her team of helpers for coordinating this!!

We will also be hosting our annual Father's Day Breakfast on Friday morning, commencing at 7:45am.  If you wish to join us and have not returned a slip indicating this, please let Kathryn in the office know so we can cater accordingly.  Angela Stamellos has organised a coffee machine for the morning and volunteered to put her skills as a barista into action - great coffees to compliment a scrumptious egg and bacon roll - who could pass that up???

Social Club News

I would like to thank Aruna, Eleanor and their team of helpers who organised our recent Trivia Night.  The night was a huge success with some BRILLIANT costumes.

Thank you to everyone who attended and made the night such fun... but particularly a HUGE thankyou to our QUIZ-MASTER... Chris Smith.

Chris puts a huge amount of time and effort into preparing for this event and on behalf of the school community I thank him most sincerely!!!  The evening's success his hugely due to his preparation and presentation 'on the night'.

Thanks Chris!!

The Social Club would like to pass on this message:

Our Social Club have been busy beavers these past few weeks!

We were finally able to hold our annual Trivia Night (which had to be cancelled in 2020 & 2021). It was such a fun night, so many fabulous costumes, such a great vibe in the room, and - we raised $1,500.

Our Pie Drive was also a huge success. Thanks to all the St Joey’s families for stocking up on pies. We raised a total of $1,700.

A very special Thank You to Aruna Nair who co- ordinated the above events.

Next up - St Joey’s Father’s Day Stall.  This will be held in the Art Room on Thursday 1st September.

So kids - bring your money and come and shop up a storm for Dad, Grandpa, or that special someone in your life. We have so many wonderful gifts for you to choose from.

A portion of the above fundraisers will enable the purchase of classroom resources, and the rest of the proceeds will go towards the developement of a new Adventure Playground.  Stay tuned for more Social Club events later on in the year.

Working with Children Checks

Please be aware that if you wish to volunteer for excursions, classroom helper programmes etc, you will be required to have a current Working with Children's Check. These can be obtained online, and if for the purpose of volunteer work, are free.

If you have a current card please make sure that we have your details on file (see Kathryn) and ensure that your card has not expired.

Student Absences

Just a reminder to families that you are able to notify the school of any student absences via the Skoolbag App - or alternatively by emailing both Kathryn (kcoventry@sjnorthcote.catholic.edu.au)and the classroom teacher, or ringing the school office directly.

If a child is away and we have no record of this, we are mandated to contact parents to confirm the student's absence.  To avoid this it's important that we are informed of any absences in advance.

Child Safe Standards

On 1 July 2022, 11 new Victorian Child Safe Standards came into effect for schools.  To meet the new Child Safe Standards, we have built on our existing child safety strategies, policies and practices to strengthen our school’s culture of child safety and protect children and young people from abuse.

The 11 Child Safe Standards are listed on the 'Child Safe Standards' section of this newsletter.  This week I would like to take the opportunity to highlight how we at St Joseph's have promoted Child Safe Standard 3.

Standard 4 - Family Engagement

Families and communities are informed, and involved in promoting child safety and wellbeing.

There are many examples of ways we communicate our commitment to child safety and wellbeing.   There remains an ongoing section of the newsletter dedicated to the 11 Standards and each week one standard is individually unpacked in this Principal's Section of the newsletter.  In addition to this our commitment to Child Safety is also displayed on our school website. As a staff, we value the safety and wellbeing of all our children and ensure this through our weekly staff meetings where we address the Child Safety Standards on our agendas. Strategies, ideas and protocols are communicated to staff during these meetings.
