Argus Community Report

Term 3, 2022

It has been another wonderful term for learning within the Argus Community. Our students have been busily working on their reading, writing, numeracy, inquiry and S.E.L. skills. The students have also produced some fantastic work to demonstrate their understanding of these topics and should be proud of their efforts. We had a great time participating in the P-2 Commonwealth Games and were exceptionally proud of all the students' persistence throughout the day.

Reading

In Reading, students have been exploring poetry and persuasive texts. We have read different types of poems and looked at rhyming, alliteration, rhythm and sensory words. We have also read different persuasive texts and used them to make text-to-text connections, look at word choice, make inferences and make summaries after reading. We have been exploring the author’s purpose after reading, as well as looking at the ways they try to persuade us.

Writing

We have been working on various text types this term including information reports about water and natural disasters where students got the opportunity to gather information using QR codes related to their ‘wondering’ on water. Students followed the writing cycle of planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing their work. They also learnt about Poetry focusing on descriptive words and rhyming, and writing persuasive letters to convince their reader of their point of view.

Maths

In Term 2, the Argus community worked on Addition and Subtraction. Students learnt a range of different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems, E.g. counting on and backwards from the bigger number, near doubles, number lines, unifix blocks, counters etc. Students have been learning to Identify outcomes of familiar events involving chance and describe them using everyday language such as ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’ or ‘might happen.’ They also explored graphing and tallying as a form of collecting data and representing this data in picture graphs or bar graphs.

Inquiry

In inquiry we have been exploring water and why water is so important. Students examine water as a resource and the factors influencing water flows and availability of water resources in different places. They investigate the nature of water scarcity and assess ways of overcoming it. Students discuss variations in people’s perceptions about the value of water and the need for sustainable water management. Students also investigate processes that continue to shape the environment, including an atmospheric or hydrologic hazard.

Important notes to remember:

  • Community doors open at 8:40am
  • Dismissal at 3:10pm
  • If your child is absent please ensure you enter the details of their absence on Compass or contact the school to notify us.
  • Please have adequate food packed in your child’s lunchbox and  suitable fruit or vegetable snacks for fruit break in session 2 (for example, pieces of fruit or yoghurt).
  • Ensure your child’s belongings are clearly labelled. This includes clothing, drink bottles, hats and lunchboxes (lids too)
  • Students are to come to school with a water bottle each day (labelled)

What you can do with your child at home

  • Continue to read to and with your child each night using their take home reader bags.
  • Encourage your child to develop more independence. (Help pack/unpack their school bag/lunch, or get their uniform ready)
  • Encourage your child to take increased responsibility for their own belongings.
  • Establishing a regular routine helps students to develop a positive approach to learning and will benefit them as they progress through their schooling.
  • Encourage your child to practise tying their own shoelaces.
  • We continue to promote healthy eating at school. We allow students to have a piece of fruit and vegetable break at 10:15am. We try to discourage highly salty, sugary and processed foods. We talk about these foods as ‘occasional’ or ‘sometimes’ food that can be enjoyed on ‘special occasions’ rather than as part of a child’s daily diet.
  • If you need to speak to your child’s mentor teacher, please contact the office to pass on the message or organise this before or after school.

Kind Regard, 1/2 Argus teaching team
