Achilles Community Report

Term 3, 2022

Welcome to The Achilles Community Newsletter, as we reach the end of the term, we look back and acknowledge the progress that our students have made. We have achieved many milestones and have created and strengthened many pillars in the education of our students. We are proud of all our students and commend them on their academic success. Book week was a great occasion not just for the Achilles community but for the entire school. Footy day and Commonwealth Day were also great junctions that we hope our students enjoyed very much like us teachers. I hope all our students enjoy their well-earned holiday and we hope to see a batch of fresh students eager to learn the following term.

Reading

In Reading, we are currently working on recounts. This consists of describing the events that are within a book, the elements consist of the introduction, the sequence of events and the conclusion. We have been on this topic for more than 5 weeks and have seen pronounced success in this topic. Students have mostly shown great understanding and have concerned themselves with gripping this notion firmly. We are continuing the conception of CVC words. Next term, we desire to work on reading full sentences, using letter sounds and heart words, considering the prodigious success we have experienced this entire year, we know our students will excel in this topic no doubt.

Over the holidays please continue to support your child's literacy skill development by reading to or with them each day or by providing them access to books to further develop their reading. Sounding out letter sounds, this can be CVC words eg; sat, cap, wet, mop... also with the combination of the heart words our students will be thriving while reading sentences.

Writing

We are currently working on recounts and have seen an abundant amount of success, but we do aspire to attain more success in the future. We have been taking out our students to numerous places such as the Argus community, playground, sandpit, the main office, and Ian’s shed and have been asking our students to do a recount of their visit. We instruct them to list the introduction, the sequence of events, and the conclusion. We are also working on CVC segmenting; the students are sounding out a series of sounds that create a word and they write the sounds down and create the word.

Maths

We are teaching students how to collect and organise data in maths. We have seen extraordinary success in this topic and are proud of the achievements that our students have conquered. Students are given/create a set of data (such as a survey) and convert that data into a picture graph. We have students collect data from each other (such as what flavour of ice cream they like the most) and organise a picture graph from the data they collected. We are also teaching students problem-solving skills. Students are told to implement different strategies which include counting on, skip-counting and adding the parts to build to their creative and logical thinking. We are giving students different problems which consist of variables, and they use these strategies to break down the problem and come to a solution. Next term, our target is to teach them money and revise what we have learnt, and we will achieve great success in this as per usual.

Special Events

We celebrated Book Week in Week 7 and we all had a great amount of fun but also helped the students grow a great passion for books. Book week consisted of events like dress-up day, book week parade, Where’s Wally hunt and buddy reading. We also enjoyed Commonwealth Day and enjoyed as everyone participated in numerous amounts of teams and united as a house and competed with different classes. These were 2 fun occasions, and we hope the students have enjoyed them as much as we teachers.
