GIRLS IN PHYSICS BREAKFAST

With a very early start, our female VCE Physics students ventured into the city to attend the annual ‘Girls in Physics Breakfast’. This event provides the unique opportunity for our students to engage with strong, female role-models who are shifting the gender-imbalances in STEM fields through their contributions to science.

At the breakfast, female physics students from around Victoria shared a table with women who are either in a career in physics or engineering, or are at university as an undergraduate or a postgraduate. The students had a chance to ask questions about their careers and what study at university is like.

After dining on some delicious pastries, our students were privileged to hear a lecture from Associate Professor Katarina Miljkovic. Through her discussion of the planetary impact of rocks from space, Dr Miljkovic advanced our understanding of the structure and evolution of the solar system with data from her contribution to NASA’s space missions.

 VCE DRAMA Excursion

As part of their Drama studies, students recently attended the MTC play “Heart is a Wasteland” at the Arts Centre. The performance was inspirational with the music and actors’ skills being enjoyed by all. Here's what some of our students had to say:

“Heart of a Wasteland is a wonderful play that is well acted and discusses the themes of romance and indigenous culture with a very deep and intricate meaning. It is a well written story where the music plays an integral part in the story. The story is inspired by real life events and features symbolism that has many meanings and can be interpreted after the lights go down on the Australian wasteland.”  James K Year 11

“Heart is a Wasteland portrays both motherhood and womanhood in a manner which questions the influence of romantic relationships and indigenous culture upon how first-nation communities grow to explore their future.” Abigail Year 11

“I found the symbolism and deep meaning of the story to be immersive and an emotional connection between the actors and the audience.”  Alana Year 11

“The play drew attention to a first Nations story, performed by actors and musicians.” Bailey Year 11

“I liked how it was connected to the indigenous culture and the telling of different stories” Chloe Year 11

Motivational Monday

Over the past few weeks, we have revamped Motivational Monday, inviting our Year 11 students to be involved as well. We had a wonderful turn-out this past Monday, with students from both year levels coming along to study, collaborate with each other, receive support from their teachers and, of course, make a toastie or two!

We have been heartened to see so many students attend in order to maximise their learning opportunities at Wheelers Hill. We would also like to acknowledge the teachers who give up their time to attend Motivational Monday every week in order to support their students.

Keep prioritising Monday afternoons in the Senior Centre as part of your dedicated study time and help yourself to a Milo, fruit, toastie and biscuits. Hard work is ALWAYS rewarded in your results.

See you on Monday,

Mr. Shepherd and Mrs. Graham-Prowse.
