GECPA Term 3

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much’ Helen Keller

In keeping with the GECPA constitution our aims and objectives are to work in cooperation with the College to contribute to the wellbeing of the school community. That includes raising funds that benefit the school and importantly our children’s education.

On Friday 2 September, your Parents’ Association held a fundraising sausage sizzle. It was a resounding success! Apparently, we under-estimated the demand. A special thanks to Parents’ Association committee members Paul McNeill, Rose Robinson and Juliet Brianton for organising the event. Similarly, many thanks to Gabrielle Darvell (GEC Business Manager) for all your assistance. It really confirmed that we can accomplish so much when we work together.

All funds raised will be used to support the College through the purchase of resources and materials. We encourage all parents and carers at GEC to get involved. Please feel free to reach out with ideas and if you can contribute: gecpa@gec.vic.edu.au

For those of you who are interested, our next GECPA meeting is scheduled for 20 October at 7:30pm (virtual event). As always you are welcome to attend. Send us an email (address above) and we will forward the agenda and the link.

I hope you enjoy the well-earned September school holidays!

Students with disability - Progress made and remaining challenges

Monash University

Thursday, 15 September 6:30- 8:30PM

This year marks two significant anniversaries for Australian education:

  • 150 years since the first public education system was first created through Victoria’s Free, Fair and Secular Education Act 1872, and
  • 30 years since the educational rights of students with disability were legislated through Australia’s Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

These movements were motivated by overwhelming evidence of systemic inequity and affirmed a bold vision of a fairer society for all Australians, aspiring to address structural inequalities arising from poverty or disability. Australia as a nation has also reaffirmed its commitment to a fairer and more equitable society by protecting the rights of all students to access a high-quality and inclusive education.

Join our panel of leading academics in the field, students, educators and advocates as they examine the progress made and the remaining challenges to overcome so we can obtain a better society through universal access to an inclusive education for all students.
