Chess Victoria Interschool Tournament at Scotch College
On Tuesday 23rd August, Glen Eira College participated in an interschool chess event at Scotch College. 36 Glen Eira College students took part in this event and formed five teams, one of which was a girls’ team. It was the first time that a girls’ team has represented Glen Eira College in interschool chess. The tournament involved the participation of 157 students from several schools.
The Glen Eira College A team performed very well winning 23 games and finishing in fifth position out of 25 competing teams, only 2 points behind the third placed school and 4 points behind the winning school. The Glen Eira College B, C and D teams were also very competitive with all three teams finishing ahead of competing teams from other schools. Due to this very good performance, five more Glen Eira College students qualified to play in the Chess Victoria Secondary Open State Final in October. Twenty Glen Eira College students will participate in this event next month.
Congratulations to Pierre Maziarz of Year 10 and Sanjay Bandla of Year 8 who each won 5 of their 7 games in a very strong tournament.
The Glen Eira College Girls’ team also played very well winning 9 games and qualified to play in the Chess Victoria Girls’ State final in October by finishing the tournament as the second best performing girls’ team. Ten girls will represent Glen Eira College in this event.
A big thank you to Mr Eric Bohlen who gives generously of his time to coach students at Chess Club.
