Respectful Relationships Seminar

Pro-social behaviours help children interact with others in ways that demonstrate respect and compassion. These behaviours are skills which can be taught and practised over time. Developing pro-social skills requires students to reflect on their behaviour and understand the features of good, respectful relationships. By learning about respectful relationships, children can resolve conflict, should it arise, and adopt appropriate roles to support individuals and promote group cohesion. They can foster personal traits such as kindness and generosity and learn about inclusive behaviours which supports their development through adolescence.

All Year 7 and 8 students attended the Respectful Relationships Seminar on 1 September. The Seminar was ably lead by the Year 10 Peer Support Leaders who were instrumental in the facilitation of this program. With appropriate training and guidance, the Peer Support Leaders developed content to be delivered, including a range of role-plays for consideration, presented on a range of important topics and led discussions and activities. The Peer Support Leaders also devised and oversaw a range of team building and physical wellbeing activities and games in the afternoon.

The Seminar aimed to assist students from the Middle Years:

  • Identify the indicators of respectful and disrespectful relationships
  • Value diversity in community
  • Develop traits appropriate to the formation and continuation of rewarding relationships
  • Understand individual roles and responsibilities as they enhance group cohesion
  • Avoid or resolve conflict in a range of situations
  • Cultivate resilience and adaptability.

School counsellor Charlotte Edmonds, presented on conflict management, offering practical advice to students that they might learn and utilise appropriate strategies in the management of their relationships.
