Year 7s collect data and statistics with the Aussie Backyard Bird Count

by Anthony Cavagna, Maths teacher

During Term Four our focus has been to show how ‘data-driven decision-making can be justified by modelling relationships to better consider environmental and social impact’. In order to do this we have taken the role of ecologists who will be presenting our research about biodiversity in our School to School Council.

By taking on this role we are being citizen scientists and are contributing to the collection of valuable data from around Australia. We utilised our mobile phones using the Aussie Backyard Bird Count  app to identify fauna and record the data we collected. We had to consider how we would ethically collect data about birdlife in our School and local environment and are in the process of analysing the data to then propose ideas for increasing biodiversity in the School grounds.

Our research contributed to the record-breaking count of over 2.6 million birds and the discovery of a nesting pair of tawny frogmouths at the Arlington campus.
