KIOSC

Year 8 KIOSC Excursion
All Year 8 students are undertaking workshops at KIOSC this week investigating the concept of energy and sustainability. Some students spent the day building and racing solar cars where they developed a stronger understanding of gear ratios, electronics and the benefits and limitations of solar energy technology. Another group of students spent the day investigating how robotics can be used to conserve energy. In this workshop, students learned to program and test their robots to conduct a series of tasks. Finally, the third workshop on offer gave a group of students the opportunity to design an entire town with a focus on sustainable use of energy and resources and build a complete model of their town.
The following is a review of this excursion from Brianna of 8D:
“On Thursday 8B, C and D went to KIOSC for the science unit on sustainability. The activities we could do were robotics, solar car building and building a sustainable town. It was really interactive and we learnt a heap. It was great to see everyone getting involved and having fun.”
Year 12 Chemistry KIOSC Excursion
It was a busy day for Wantirna College at KIOSC on Thursday 5th May with three Year 8 classes upstairs in the Discovery Centre and a full class of our senior Chemistry students accompanied by their teacher, Ms Gallagher in the commercial laboratory downstairs. A significant concept studied in Year 12 Chemistry involves the use of instrumental analysis to identify a range of substances. With new technologies in chemical analysis being developed at such a rapid pace, it is important that students have some understanding and experience in such technologies. We are fortunate that KIOSC has such a great range of equipment and expertise.
