Bike Safety Day

This term selected students from the Special Education Centre had the opportunity to take part in the Community and Road Education Scheme (CARES). The CARES facility is located at Palmdale and is a joint venture provided by Central Coast Council and the local Police.

First students were taken into a classroom and given a brief road safety lesson via an interactive board. They learned about the importance of wearing a helmet and how to check if their bicycle is road worthy.

Next students were fitted with a bike and helmet before being taken through a challenging, training course of riding round markers to practise turning and stopping.  The highlight was when students were allowed to ride on the model road with line markings, stop signs, pedestrian crossings, roundabouts and traffic lights. In a few hours students improved their riding skills and many were using hand signals.

Our students participated enthusiastically and I am pleased to report there were no accidents and only a few points lost. Although students were tired when they returned to school, we all thoroughly enjoyed the day and look forward to holding the event again.

International Day of People with a Disability

On Friday 2 November our Dance group and Signing Choir travelled to Wyong Race Club to perform in the Job Centre Australia Fair Go Talent Showcase in celebration of International Day of People with a Disability. With over 250 people in attendance and 22 wonderful performances ranging from singing, dancing, signing choir and rap speeches our students were immersed amongst some very talented and inspirational people.

We were all lucky enough to also meet the Fair Go ambassador Ben Tudhope who is an Australian Winter Snowboard Para Olympian and was one of our judges for the day. What an inspirational speaker.

Our students had an amazing day with a sausage sizzle, popcorn, slushies and Danceoffs with lots of prizes up for grabs. Some of our students won Dance off prizes including gift cards to Westfield, Avoca beach picture theatre tickets and McDonald’s vouchers.

Every Participant was a winner on the day but our Signing Choir came away as the overall winners.

Thank you to Alex K and Dave Secomb for driving our students to Wyong and to Angie Dickinson, Dani Bath, Marion Ryan and Larissa Gunderson for supporting our students on the day.

Congratulations Lexci Kaczmarczyk and Jarrod Parker - Probus Awards

I had a lovely morning at the Probus Ceremony where two of our Year 10 students, Lexci Kaczmarczyk and Jarrod Parker received their Citizenship Awards.

The club spoke highly of Henry Kendall and the amazing students we have at our school, it was a pleasure to not only see Lexci and Jarrod be recognised, but to hear such wonderful feedback about our school.

If you see these two around, you may wish to congratulate them on this achievement.

SRC Halloween Day

On Wednesday 31 October our newly elected SRC school leaders ran a Halloween event at school. Students could wear hair accessories, wigs or wings, tails and socks to celebrate Halloween. A gold coin donation was requested to raise money for future SRC events. The SRC leaders also provided a photo booth on the day for fun photos of students in their Halloween gear. We're looking forward to the SRC's next event.
