Boarding

Welcome Back to Term 4 Boarders and Families

Although it is a warm welcome back to boarding this week for a majority of our boarders, it is important to acknowledge those boarders who have been here for the entirety of the holidays. Many of our VCE boarders stayed in to focus upon their studies, and attend the VCE revision lectures held at our senior school. This commendable dedication to achieve their academic best has been outstanding, and I wish all of our boarders who will be undertaking VCE exams later this term all the very best and hope this hard work in revising pays dividends.

Our boarders don’t take holidays lightly! They embrace the time to reconnect with family but also to explore new horizons. We have had boarders involved in: educational trips to New Zealand, rowing camps, community service, donating blood, trips to Warrnambool, baking with MOD staff, being employed with new jobs, completing work experience in Melbourne and Adelaide, overseas holidays, cricket competitions and trials for the Western Waves Academy, birthday celebrations, Melbourne excursions, podcast entries, umpiring at National Hockey champs in Tasmania, cattle being shown at the Royal Melbourne Show, working dog training. Our boarders know how to turn a holiday into an opportunity. It almost seems our busy boarders are returning to boarding life for a rest!

Our New Chefs

This week we are proud to announce our new full-time chef, Alfonso Cano. Our current chef, Colin, will be working with Alfonso for this week and then Alfonso will take over as our full-time chef. Alfonso originates from Columbia and is a chef with an extensive background working at both the Melbourne University and Monash University student Colleges. He has been highly recommended as a leader in the field and one who will continue to steer us in our boarding journey of focusing upon sleep, nutrition and exercise.

Alfonso will also be working with our new weekend chef, Girlie. Girlie has a background from the Philippines and specialises in Asian inspired meals, which again, our boarders are going to be most impressed with. We welcome with open-arms our two new chefs to the boarding community and look forward to experiencing their wonderful culinary expertise.

Ben McCure (Yr 11) on Work Experience During the Holidays

In the holidays, on the 25th and 26th of September, I completed work experience with Riley Alexander at Inverleigh Media, a sports media company in South Melbourne. Inverleigh produce a number of short 30 minute videos on a variety of different sports and events such as Soccer and the Olympics. They send these videos out to more than 400 different broadcasters across the globe. During my time I participated in the production of three different shows, a soccer show called ‘Life’s a pitch’, a fight show named ‘Total Combat’ and an Olympic show called ‘Countdown to Tokyo’. The production process involves script writing, the recording of ‘voice overs’, editing and finally, ‘playout’ which is where they watch the final product and make any final adjustments before publication.

I found this to be an incredibly valuable experience as it helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the sports journalism/media field and exposed me to a part of this industry I have not seen much of. I would like to thank Stephen Mirtschin (Head of Cricket and Year 6 teacher) for organising this opportunity for Riley Alexander (Yr 11) and me and everyone who helped make it possible.

Chloe Andersen

Chloe Andersen (Yr12) has taken a short stint away from the books during the holidays and umpired in the National U/13 Hockey Championships held in Tasmania. Chloe is a recognised national umpire and was selected earlier this year for this specific championship. The championship involved 25 teams from across the nation with 162 games played on 3 fields in only 8 days and overseen by 18 Hockey Australia umpires. Chloe umpired 17 games, made some nail-biting decisions and received outstanding feedback from the Hockey Australia managers. Well done Chloe on an amazing feat of balancing sporting commitments and your studies.

Land the Trip by Airlie Treloar (Yr 11)

“Land The Trip” is an all expenses paid trip to Lincoln University in New Zealand for a week. Lincoln University is an Agricultural University based in Canterbury on the South Island and offers placements during the holiday period for secondary students to experience what tertiary study would be like. I was fortunate enough to be one of the 16 successful Australian applicants to attend the holiday camp. We all had an incredible time going around the campus and listening to lectures about what Lincoln University has to offer. We stayed at the campus and got a feel of what university life was like. I couldn’t have asked for a more exciting and amazing week and recommend this is to anybody interested in agricultural or horticultural studies. It was simply an amazing opportunity for anyone who is interested in studying overseas and experiencing a new culture but also to be enjoying your passions.

Thank You to Families

On Sunday the 6th prior to the boarders starting their Term 4, a small gathering was held at the Director of Boarding’s residence. I would like to thank all of the families and staff who attended, in particular those who have travelled long distances such as from the South East South Australia, Bendigo, and Melbourne. We were fortunate enough to keep out of the rain and enjoy each other’s company and simply get to know each other’s family and children. All in all, over 30 people attended from 4-8pm and we agreed this social time is something very special to our community and brings us all together. I do acknowledge the challenges our families have in attending such events with farming duties, long distances to travel and family commitments still having to be attended to but we look forward to hosting more events in the future for our current and prospective boarding families. Watch this space!
