Preservation of our local heritage

A petition has been set up by the City of Kingston’s Mayor to help preserve our local heritage.

There is concern in the local community that some of our local heritage may be lost once work commences on removing the level crossing at Chelsea Station. Of particular concern is the potential loss of two stone seats dating back to 1942, which were placed at Chelsea Station as a memorial to Cr G.R.A. Beardsworth. There are currently no plans to save the seats from removal, only the commemorative plaque is to remain.

Roy Beardsworth was a much respected member of the community. He was instrumental in the establishment of Mordialloc-Chelsea High School, which opened with 120 students in 1924, and also served on the first School Council. He twice held the position of Mayor of Chelsea and worked tirelessly for others. Roy died in 1939, aged 51.

At the conclusion of Roy’s funeral service the hearse passed through ranks of children on its way to the Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery. Children from St Joseph’s Catholic School, Chelsea State School and Edithvale State School lined the roadway. Near the Mordialloc Creek Bridge boys from Mordialloc Chelsea High School, with their headmaster, paid their respects. The bells at the Chelsea Fire Station and Aspendale Fire Station were tolled and the shops of Chelsea were closed to allow the staff to stand outside their premises as the cortege passed.

Kingston Libraries School Holiday Program

Kingston Libraries has just released their June-July school holiday program for kids, youth and families. While libraries are now beginning to open up to the public again, they are still unable to run events for groups in the library spaces. But that hasn’t stopped them from creating a fun holiday program! They are running our program remotely. A range of free activities are on offer via mailout or online including craft and STEAM kits to do at home, online games (Minecraft, Dungeons & Dragons), author talks (George Ivanoff and Jane Godwin), theatrical performances, cooking classes and science experiments. Their annual short story competition for children and youth launches too (27 June), and their daily story time live stream continues as usual.

The program of events is available to download here and bookings can be made online or by calling us - https://www.kingston.vic.gov.au/library/Kids-Place/Kids-Activities-2#SchoolHolidayProgram

All activities and events are free, but they do require bookings (except for story time live stream) so that the links for online content can be shared and to enable the mailing out of kits.
