Heart-warming initiative

Bringing warmth and comfort to those in need this winter, Luzie Gillard (Year 11), her Mum, Bernadette, and fellow students have joined forces with the Country Women’s Association, the New Norfolk Library, Hobart craft groups and the St Vincent de Paul Society to create and donate hand-sewn knitted blankets.

Thank you to all kind knitters and sewers for making these wonderful gifts.

The cosy blankets were presented to St Vincent de Paul during the school holidays and will be shared with those who visit Loui's Van in the coming weeks.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week

In honour of NAIDOC Week (5-12 July), SMC's Year 11-12 Religion in Society and Year 7 Visual Arts students collaborated on a First Nation inspired artwork in the College's Reflection Garden.

Students investigated how artmaking is a spiritual ritual used to explore and share ideas, meaning, beliefs and values.

The girls then had the opportunity to make their own rock paintings, inspired by their personal spiritual ideas and beliefs, which they shared with our community in a space of solace and reflection.

Penguins captivated by light

Our Year 1 Penguins had so much fun at the end of Term 2, learning about the science of light with elements of dark, shadows and colours.

They explored where light comes from using an assortment of materials including glow sticks, torches, puppets, a light box, crystals and even Skittles!

Thinking outside the triangle

Have you heard of a Sierpinski triangle?

Recently, our Year 7 students investigated fractals in maths, with each class joining to create one large Sierpinski triangle using their individual triangles on our College Green!

Fun fact: The Sierpinski triangle is a fractal attractive fixed set in the shape of an equilateral triangle, subdivided recursively into smaller equilateral triangles. Now, that's getting creative in maths!

Creative writing - in a flash!

Starting in the middle of a story was a different experience for our imaginative Year 10 Creative Writing class, who took on flash fiction recently for the Young Tasmanian Writers’ Prize 2020 competition.

Themes of isolation and island inspired tales of self-discovery, mental health, criminal profiling and a life in a dystopian isolated town for Year 10 students Lily Nielsen, Meg Pinelli, Ruby Pensalfini-Brown and Scarlett Pollard.

'It's great to see your writing evolve and to decide where you can take your own piece,' said Ruby.

Best of luck to you all in the writing competition!

Essays made easy with toffees

In Year 10 English, students have been busy writing comparative analytical essays on empowerment using the TOFEES structure (topic sentence, overview, feature of language, examples, effects, summary).

To support their studious efforts, they embraced eating toffees while they worked, which we're sure helped boost their productivity!

Spotlight on design

Our students are certainly an inventive bunch! Check out some of the excellent projects that have recently come out of Year 9 Materials and Design.
