Literacy Week

It’s that time of year when we celebrate books, literature, and the privilege of literacy.

The iCentre has been decked out in a Dr Seuss theme.  We have made beautiful bookmarks and badges for students and have many fun activities for everyone to enjoy.

On Wednesday we held our annual Literacy Week Party.  As usual, the students who signed up attended in costume, and the joy in the room was palpable.  Musical book covers, a green egg and spoon race, prizes for the best-dressed, a popcorn cart, a fairy floss cart, and an amazing celebration cake were highlights of the party.

On Friday, we launch the Principal’s Reading Challenge.  This challenge is a Home Room competition.  Students and teachers in each Home Room record the minutes they spend reading each week for four weeks.  We would love parents to support this by encouraging their daughters to read more than ever over the next four weeks.

As with so much in 2020, some of our plans were thwarted because of closed borders.  The author events we had planned, such as our beloved Read Like a Girl with your Dad, were unable to go ahead.  Fingers crossed these plans can all go ahead next year and we won’t let this stop our love of reading this year.

In the words of Dr Seuss:

“You can find magic wherever you look.  Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.”
