Leading Literacy Learning @LNPS

Lockleys North Primary School is proudly leading literacy learning, as one of the first sites Australia wide to implement the MultiLit program, InitiaLit at the Reception (Foundation), Year 1 and Year 2 level.  On Wednesday, 19th August, by invitation of leadership, the Local Education Team visited our site for a ‘Walk and Talk’ to celebrate our success in reading, through our implementation of the InitiaLit program R-2.  The visit began at the Data Wall where leaders presented a snapshot of student data, showing the progress and growth during Semester 1, 2020.

The thorough teaching and learning has resulted in positive results for most students in each cohort, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. The continuous assessment cycle provides extensive feedback for teacher’s to analyse and determine next steps to determine success.

During the ‘Walk and Talk’ the following questions were asked:

  • What are you learning?  Why?
  • How are you being successful with your learning?
  • How do you know?
  • Where do you go for help?

When we are sure that students can answer these questions with insight, then we know that the learning is relevant for and clear to students.

The overwhelming response from the Flinders Park 2 Education Director, Sue George-Duif was that the teaching and learning and accompanying data is ‘impressive’.  We agree and as a leadership team, are sure that the comprehensive whole class reading and spelling program which includes explicit and systematic phonics instruction, as well as a literature component to enrich oral language, listening comprehension and vocabulary, is having a strong impact to increase student achievement in reading at LNPS.
