Science Week 2020

Kilbreda is celebrating National Science Week one week early from Monday 10 to Friday 14 August. The theme of Science Week for 2020 is:  ‘Deep Blue: innovation for the future of our oceans’.

Earlier this year, the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) was launched in Launceston. This centre will use ‘big picture thinking’ to design new solutions in the areas of offshore engineering and technology, aquaculture and marine ecology, and marine renewable energy. According to the CSIRO, “The concept of a ‘blue economy’ is one that balances sustainable economic benefit from the world’s oceans and coastlines with the need to protect their long-term health. The clip here describes some of the importance of our oceans. To explore the theme, all Year 7 and 8 students, and the Yr 9 Environmental Science and Sustainability class will participate in a virtual incursion presented by “The Marine Team.”

In addition, all students are encouraged to participate in any or all of three competitions. These are:

1 - Kilbreda Top Scientist 2020 Competition

Are you naturally curious? Do you like experimenting? Do you wonder about how this work? Then you could be in the running to take the inaugural title of Kilbreda’s Top Scientist 2020!

There are lots of science prizes on offer: Periodic Table mugs, heat changing mugs, Periodic Table lanyards, brain stress balls, Science at home kits and slinkies! To enter, you need to undertake an experiment of your choice at home. Just make sure that your experiment is safe and that an adult knows what you are doing. Take a photo and/or a short video of your experiment and then fill out the following Google form by the end of Science Week (14 August). You can enter as many times as you like and winner will be announced the week after Science Week!

2 - Kilbreda Top Engineer 2020 Competition

Do you like a challenge? Are you a builder at heart? Are you creative? Are you a designer?

Then you could be in the running to take the title of Kilbreda’s Top Engineer 2020!

Using only up to:

20 pieces of thick spaghetti

1 metre of masking tape (or sticky tape)

1 metre of string, wool or fishing wire

1 marshmallow

Your challenge is to build the Tallest Freestanding Structure (no part of the structure can be taped or tied on to another surface or object) that supports one marshmallow at its peak. You can work in a team of up to four people if you have willing family member at home. Traditionally you are limited to 18 minutes to get this engineering feat completed, but for our remote challenge, you can take as much time as you need. When you are happy with your structure, please take a photo of your achievement and make sure you have a ruler or a tape measure in the photo alongside so that the height can be verified. The winning entrant will have the tallest structure, as measured from the base to the top of the marshmallow. To enter, just complete the Google form below by 14 August and add your photo to verify the height of your tower. May the best engineer win!
