SENIOR SCHOOL LIBRARY HOLIDAY OPENING HOURS

Following a successful trial in 2019, the College is pleased to offer Year 11 and 12 students the opportunity to use the Senior School Library as a quiet study space during the upcoming holiday break.

There will be no formal supervision from teachers, but ASC staff will be present to ensure a safe and productive environment. The opening hours of the Senior School Library during the holidays are 8.00am–4.00pm.

YEAR 11 INTEGRATED SCIENCE HOT AIR BALLOONS

The Integrated Science course is all about learning scientific principles using a practical and investigative approach. Recently the Year 11 Integrated Science students worked in small groups to build hot air balloons in order to investigate the concepts of forces and density, and the physics of flight.

The hot air balloons were built from range of lightweight materials and used a firelighter as a fuel source to fill the envelope. The weather on testing day was not ideal, and the students completed multiple test flights, looking to make minor adjustments and improve performance along the way.

Unfortunately, the balloons failed to take flight. One of them suffered a catastrophic failure and went down in a blaze of glory. Regardless of the outcome, all of the students involved can be proud of their efforts and the care they took in constructing the balloons.

SUSTAINABLE HOUSE PROJECT

In Year 7W’s Science lessons we are constructing sustainable houses by using recyclable materials. The purpose of this project is to design a house that can be sustainable into the future. We are highlighting energy and water saving features, both physical and behavioral. Some of the innovative ideas are: a bottle wall to let light into the house, gutters that collect rainwater, grey water systems to irrigate crops, filters to recycle waste water, and temperature-insulated walls. Other ideas have been underground homes, the use of louvres to circulate air, and using stormwater for showers. We are enjoying this project so much that I keep asking for more time and extra Science lessons.
